This post implies transit is only for poor people, but if transit is the most convenient option everyone will ride. Building TOD with too much parking is the real issue

Canadian public transit agencies should work more with the uitp (the international public transport association) and less with apta (the American public transport association), we just have so much to learn from the world and a lot of our mistakes are common with the US.

It's fascinating to learn how many more kids die in ATV accidents every year than in e-bike accidents, then observing that there is a moral panic about kids riding e-bikes but not about kids riding ATVs.

The Astros having their season ended by the White Sox inspired me to remake my "Houston-sized Chicago" map. It's been 66 years since Chicago last grew by annexation. In an alternate reality where the city grew to match the physical size/shape of Houston (as shown) it'd have twice the population.
A map depicting Houston, TX with the following information:
Land area: 640.44 square miles
2020 population: 2,304,580A map depicting Chicago if it had the same land area and similar shape as Houston
Land area: 640.30 square miles
2020 population: 5,059,448

People want to talk about trains but are missing out on the transformative power of a well-organized bus network. Colorado's Bustang has knocked intercity bus service out of the park and added 18 new routes since launching Bustang in 2015. Illinois should directly copy Colorado's success.

This is from last 30 days of Mansueto Institute's dataset (6/27-7/27...might mean it's not being updated rn) Weekdays, by hour of entry into DLSD. Plotting percentiles because of outliers & because it's based on ~5 min interval pings, so not very precise, but you get a rough idea
4 plots for 2 routes (146, 147) in 2 directions (northbound, southbound), showing how long buses took to traverse DuSable Lake Shore Drive (DLSD), by time of day, from 6 to 22, based on the time of entry into DLSD. Each plot shows the median and interquartile ranges (range between 25th & 75th percentiles).

Route 146 Northbound is roughly 8 minutes median, aside from hours 16 to 18, when the median is around 10 minutes, and the 75th percentile jumps up to 16 minutes for hours 17 and 18.

Route 146 Southbound is roughly 9 minutes median. There is a small bump at hour 8 to 10 minutes, and a more sustained bump from hours 14 to 17, where the median is 11-12 minutes, and 75th percentile goes up to 16 minutes at hour 17.

Route 147 Northbound is roughly 12 minutes median, and the median bumps up to around 14 minutes at hours 10, 13, and 16 to 18. 75th percentile goes up to 18 minutes at hours 17 and 18.

Route 147 Southbound is roughly 12 minutes median, except from hours 14 to 17, when it is around 14 minutes. 75th percentile is around 18 minutes from hours 15 to 17.4 plots for 2 routes (146, 147) in 2 directions (northbound, southbound), showing how fast buses traveled on DuSable Lake Shore Drive (DLSD), by time of day, from 6 to 22, based on the time of entry into DLSD. Each plot shows the median and interquartile ranges (range between 25th & 75th percentiles).

Route 146 Northbound is roughly 24 mph median, aside from hours 16 to 18, when the median is around 18 mph, and the 25th percentile goes down to 12 mph for hours 17 and 18.

Route 146 Southbound is roughly 20 mph median. There is a small dip at hour 8 to 19 mph, and a more sustained dip from hours 14 to 17, where the median is around 16 mph, and 25th percentile goes down to 12 minutes at hour 17.

Route 147 Northbound is roughly 29 mph median, and the median dips down to 25-26 mph at hours 10, 13, and 16 to 18. 25th percentile goes down to 18 mph at hours 17 and 18.

Route 147 Southbound is roughly 28 mph median, except from hours 14 to 17, when it is around 24 mph. 25th percentile is 19 mph from hours 15 to 17.

I wish that as LA Metro Board Chair, Mayor Bass could advocate for more frequent Metro Rail service between 8 pm & last train of the night. When Mayor Villaraigosa was Metro Chair in 2011, he started the "More Trains More Often" initiative: trains running every 10 mins. between 6 pm & midnight!

After 9/11, many Americans opted to drive instead of fly. But because plane travel is much safer than car travel, the shift led to a surge in crash deaths. Researchers have found that the number of lives lost (2,000+) is comparable to those killed on 9/11. www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1...

In 1957, a T ride cost 20¢. Adjusted for inflation, that's $2.40, exactly what the T costs today (well, $2.41, but close). The Turnpike from 128 to New York cost $2.45. Adjusted for inflation, it would be equivalent to $29.64. Driving the length of the Pike costs $4.25 today.

Aspen actually has one of the best bus systems in the country with VelociRFTA, the only rural Bus Rapid Transit in the US
Picture of VelociRFTA BRT Station in the mountains: "The VelociRFTA service began in September 2013. In 2014, during its first full year in operation, ridership increased by 15% to 4.7 million annual trips. By 2015 and 2016, ridership was roughly aligned with the record ridership experienced in 2008. Now at 5.2 million riders per year, RFTA is the largest rural transit authority in the country and second largest transit agency in Colorado".
