I saw a progress Toronto ad today that was talking about how things are going really well in the city and I just felt gaslit given the state of the transit network. Transit should be a key part of a progressive vision of Toronto and it doesn't feel like it currently is getting much attention.

It seems pretty likely that the mayor of Toronto is going to be a re-elected and I really hope the mayor takes transit much more seriously. The TTC is not in a good state and this is a major part of the city's responsibilities!

The Martin Goodman Trail belongs to the City, yes. But it's managed by at least 3 groups within the city: Parks, Transportation, Waterfront Toronto And lighting mostly belongs to Hydro 🫠 When did you last see parks lighting improved? Who could force all these groups to work together to fix this?

One of the important reasons to do a lot of long division practice by hand is that it seems to be a mostly irreplaceable way to develop an intuitive sense of what quotients are roughly reasonable. Most of the time this is irrelevant, but sometimes going “wait, that’s not right” will save your ass.

I really question whether Chow or Bradford ride the subway or streetcars regularly, because the slow speed and delays are unbelievably bad. The Spadina streetcar is an abomination considering it has dedicated lanes.

Too often the North American response to escalating transit costs is to aim lower - hydrogen instead of electric trains, low- instead of high-speed rail. We need to fix the root cause of high costs - onerous permitting, weak state capacity, unreliable funding - not settle for less.

Hong Kong may have horrible cost control, but the city is building some of the most complex and highest capacity projects on Earth. In my Toronto Tragedy article, one thing to note is that while metro construction costs in Toronto are high down-scoping a metro project to a light metro or light rail project is only a solution to reduce “sticker shock”. However, they treat both these alternatives as providing equal value in speed, comfort and capacity. This is incorrect, sacrifices have been made in the design that erode the value of the project.

The city of Toronto does not control road pricing, or bike lanes (sadly), or subway expansion, but it could have game changing impacts on transport by transforming the streetcar network. FastTrackTO has given many of the answers, but a transformation ought to be bigger.
