This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

For decades, we couldn’t trace the link between new fossil fuel projects and their damage to people and planet. But now we can.

AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”
APStylebook @APStylebook

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.

Often see stuff around AI increasing access to English language spaces through translation, but.....machine translation has been around for *decades*! Generative AI increases access to English *writing* and creation, meaning it also coaxes non-English speakers into packing landmines into their work

Not ‘shape’ they want to destroy and pervert education as a project. They make it very clear that teachers and professors are their enemies and that schools and universities cannot exist as they do now. They want complete control of education; as their fascist desires necessitate that.

Right from the beginning it was obvious that genAI in militaries would be excellent for transferring blame for war crimes to software and hardware that can't be held accountable. Not that anyone doing war crimes even needs that, they all get away with it anyway. Just an additional bonus.

Did you know that even prompting an LLM to edit your grammar might alter the semantic meaning of your text and remove your human voice? If you're in Bergen on Friday September 4 you can hear Isadora White and Marwa Abdulhai present their recent paper on this. They took human-written short essays, asked LLMs to revise them and found significant changes well beyond just copyediting. This is a large-scale computational study, but the image shared here shows two examples of how this happens.

We'll also have talks by John Gallagher, whose newsletter on AI and writing I read religiously, and by Rashid Mustafin, a PhD student at NHH, and Pedro Jacobetty. And before these public talks the AI STORIES team gets to spend two days in a workshop with these and other brilliant people - I'm so excited!
