Oh no I loved these! I never understood the appeal of gummy bears and their ilk. Too smooth and weird. I need my sticky candy covered in extra sugar!! These were the pinnacle followed by spice drops and orange slices (the candy, not the fruit).

Given that the best CA could manage for a Dem gov candidate is Becerra? The rankings disappoint but don't surprise. We're not beating the "sheeple" charges yet. FYI, Becerra helped tank the Paramount thing tho Newsom & Bonta are being blamed primarily. Becerra's shittiness is just getting started.

This is such a great thread because it tells you instantly how to answer the supposedly intractable regulation problem: liability, potentially joint liability, for the person who set up the AI system.

An interesting explainer. It reminds me of this post but applied broadly to all the drooling tech bros. Now I'm extra mad that these idiots managed to jam their sticky little fingers into all the machines the grown-ups use to manage our lives.

He talked about electric cars. I don't know anything about cars, so when people said he was a genius I figured he must be a genius.
Then he talked about rockets. I don't know anything about rockets, so when people said he was a genius I figured he must be a genius.
Now he talks about software. I happen to know a lot about software & Elon Musk is saying the stupidest shit I've ever heard anyone say, so when people say he's a genius I figure I should stay the hell away from his cars and rockets.

I see a lot of people actively losing their minds about the AI stuff and I'm honestly starting to feel bad for them. But it's blinding them to the real problems. These things are not your girlfriend, but they're probably going to smash-and-grab passwords and attack bank or government data.
The observation that the most alarmist claims about A.I.’s impact seem to come from the individuals most connected to Rationalism should anger us. This exaggerated grimness makes it easy to overlook the more immediate harms created by these technologies, such as their potential use in cybersecurity attacks, excess resource consumption, impact on our cognitive fitness, role in undermining education and amplification of soul-deadening slop.

This style of anxious talk also allows the A.I. companies to portray themselves as the reluctant “stewards” of an inevitable technology, which is a framing they can use to deflect blame for damage caused by their own products.

Dolly Parton’s sister reveals singer offered to test experimental cancer drugs before she died
‘My sister was always thinking of others,’ Parton’s younger sister Stella wrote in a Facebook tribute Dolly Parton’s younger sister Stella Parton has shared a moving tribute to the late country music singer on Thursday, revealing that Dolly offered to receive experimental cancer drugs “in the hope of helping others in the future” – an act of kindness and generosity that extended until the end of her life. “My sister was one of the most generous, thoughtful and kind people I’ve ever known,” Stella wrote in a tribute shared on Facebook on Thursday. “What the world saw is exactly who she was.” Continue reading...

That thing where your own timeline shows you the craziest juxtaposition? Finally happened to me. Having a hard time believing the SF rental market is NOT going to crash out...

Bingo.

His screenshot text: OpenAI and Anthropic remain the suns around which the whole AI industry rotate and while there is a sense that compute is fungible (i.e. it can be filled by anyone), investor would be mistaken to think that the industry would be OK if something were to happen to either startup (or if they weren't able to come public within the next 9-12 months as planned) since so much of the data center capacity being erected is predicated on both continuing to grow parabolically (which is why the CNBC article on Thurs about OpenAI slashing prices on two models is a red flag as it suggests open-weight competition is eroding the pricing power for frontier firms).

(Me now - I typed that. I'm a long sentence writer, but that was a bit much)

(via Vital Knowledge)Screenshot of Hyperlexic post "San Francisco's rent scene continues to go wild. Median listing for a 2BR is over $6000???"

The screen shot text included from the SF biz journal says:
San Francisco median two-bedroom rents passed $6000 for the first time.
Aggressive AI hiring and stagnant construction fueled the price surge
Active listings in SF dropped 30% year over year.

SF's AI boom is fueling intense competition for a place to live, pushing rents to new milestone highs as the number of available units in the city drops sharply, according to the latest data from rental marketplace Zumper.

"AI sector hiring and a near-empty construction pipeline coincide with the surge, and together they create a demand-meets-scarcity dynamic," according to Zumper's National Rent Report for July.
"San Francisco continues to rewrite its record book."
San Francisco's median rent for a two-bedroom apartment crossed the $6000 mark for the first time since Zumper began tracking the SF rental market more than a decade ago. SF's two bedroom median rent reached $6020 in July, up a whopping 25.9% from a year ago, while the median one-bedroom rent grew to $4180, up 22.9 from a year ago.
