Amen! "I wonder why he thinks so little of readers’ ability to engage beyond their own experiences. Books don’t discriminate. You don’t have to be Black, Palestinian, or queer to enjoy literature created by writers who are, any more than you need to be a dragon rider to binge a romantasy series."

As someone who worked independently w/Whiting for a dozen years, during that time they awarded Whiting Awards to writers from all around the country (incl. sometimes outside of the US) and to numerous writers published by indie presses, as well as writers who didn’t even have contracts yet.
