"By the end of 2030," reports NYT, the amount of energy used by data centers"is expected to quadruple, eclipsing the power used by all countries in South America and Africa combined." This is extinctionism.

We are given only a limited number of truly perfect summer days in our time on Earth. One of the more insidious cruelties of fossil fuel greed is how it slowly strips those days from us, more and more throughout our lifetimes, perhaps without us even realizing what we have lost.

‘dear rax, my middle class parents are ashamed that i clean houses for a living’ www.patreon.com/posts/160262...
You have nothing to be ashamed of, though. You're doing good, necessary work, and it's not your fault the work has been so thoroughly devalued as to make you an object of other people's shame. That shame isn't about you, by the way. It's not about wishing you were an architect or an oral surgeon, though that's the externalized shape it may take. Your parents are ashamed because their kid cleans houses, which
forces them to recognize that there's no difference between them and the people who clean houses. A house cleaner is no longer an unfortunate to be pitied, an uneducated bum whose crappy life plays out across a thank-God-unbridgeable divide. They share their
DNA with one. No difference at all.
In a just civilization that understood its humanity a little better, parents would be ashamed to admit their kids were tech CEOs or finance titans. If that sounds polemical, then I guess a rational evaluation of evidence must be polemical. What did a house cleaner ever do to any of us, except try to make our environments a little sweeter? Versus what do the tech CEOs do? The finance bros? Some people are made important by their work while others are made untouchable by theirs, and boy do most of us get it backwards on which is which.

I'm curating this books reviews series in conjunction with @maris.bsky.social for @literaryhub.bsky.social ... Everything we're soliciting is here on this page ... www.sandyernestallen.com/announcements
Deadline approaching! I’m working on an exciting book reviews-related project in collaboration with Maris Kreizman for Lit Hub. We’ve got two calls out, basically: For readers / authors: We’re interested in receiving recommendations of books written by a trans and queer people that were overlooked by the NYT book review between ~2013 - 2022 (under Pamela Paul’s leadership). If you are an author and your own book was overlooked, feel free to write me (or let me know on Bluesky). If you are a reader and you want to recommend a queer- or trans-authored book you adore that again the NYT did not review when it was released during this time-frame, again please feel free to let me know (again here or on bsky).

If you’re a book reviewer and you want to pitch a book you’d potentially review for the aforementioned series, please pitch me via my contact form. To potential book reviewers: We have set a September 1 deadline. Again, we’re focused on books authored by trans/queer people that were published between 2013 - 2022 and that weren’t reviewed by the NYT under Paul (and conceivably should have been, a subjective standard, for sure, which we’ll figure out). Please don’t recommend books that don’t meet these criteria. In your pitch: Send a paragraph or two explaining why you’d want to review this book in particular (please don’t send much shorter nor much longer; I’d also probably prefer you pitch one book over two or several). Please share a brief bio for yourself and a website, if you have one. Please also include one or two of your best clips, ideally previously published book reviews. Again: Pitch via my contact form. For reviewers, this is a paid opportunity. (I’m just coordinating on behalf of the publication; which has said $250 per ~800 - 1000 word review. We may have some flexibility there, depending on what we all ultimately decide.) We will discuss further specifics with those who we follow up with. Figure you most likely won’t hear from us under at least a few …
