It’s John Coltrane’s centennial today. Which Coltrane album are you listening to right now ? (There are no wrong answers.)
Cover of John Coltrane “Expression” LPBack cover of Coltrane “Expression” LPPERSONNEL
JOHN COLTRANE, tenor sax
ALICE COLTRANE, piano
JIMMY GARRISON, bass
RASHIED ALI, drums
OGUNDE (Recorded March 17, 1967)
OFFERING (Recorded February 15, 1967)
EXPRESSION (Recorded March 17, 1967)
JOHN COLTRANE, flute
ALICE COLTRANE, piano
JIMMY GARRISON, bass
RASHIED ALI, drums
PHAROAH SANDERS, piccolo
TO BE (Recorded February 15, 1967)Liner notes excerpt (by Nat Hentoff): The way Coltrane put it was: "I want to be a force for real good. In other words, I know that there are bad forces, forces that bring suffering to others and misery to the world, but I want to be the opposite force, I want to be the force which is truly for good."
This was a man who, as Jimmy Garrison said, had discovered what he was on earth to do; and because he had so clear and urgent a sense of the reason for his being, he was able to focus all his energies on that reason, by contrast with the scattered use most of the rest of us make of our capacities.

They disinvented the VCR. You might think that the reason we don't have VCRs anymore is because VCRs were supplanted by DVDs, PVRs and streaming, but that's not the case. They had it in for the VCR from the very start, and they never stopped trying to kill it. Eventually, they succeeded. 1/
A 1960s family living room in which a mom, dad and two kids are mesmerized by a cabinet-style TV. The image has been altered. The TV has an early 1990s VCR atop it. The TV screen is displaying a cross-sectioned human head with brains and spine on display. A huge fist has materialized in the room, with bloody spiked knuckle-dusters, smashing into the VCR. The oil painting over the sofa has been replaced with a pulp image of a male head, its cranium removed and replaced by a dome. Inside the dome is a red eight-segment VCR clock, displaying 12:00. The background in the painting is a tangle of cassette tape. The whole image's colors have been boosted, giving it an overexposed look.

One irony of Republican hysteria over the Smithsonian is that its 1976 Bicentennial exhibitions—i.e., long before its supposed hijacking by woke activists—also critiqued racism and celebrated America’s identity as a “nation of immigrants”

Despite the whining about “ historical accuracy,” the racist backlash to the casting in Nolan’s Odyssey is about the right wanting to justify racial hierarchy by projecting it into a past where it did not actually exist. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
When some on the right speak of reverence for “civilization,” what they’re doing is trying to anachronistically justify the hierarchy of race they would like to see enacted today by rooting it in antiquity. You cannot cast Black people in The Odyssey, because The Odyssey is a pillar of “Western civilization,” which they consider to be white. This faction of the far right imagines antiquity as a kind of idyllic Jim Crow universe of utterly separate civilizations, one in which the integration they despise could not possibly exist. But Greece is not as far from Africa as the North American continent is, and the modern construct of race, a pseudoscientific product of the Atlantic slave trade, would not be invented until thousands of years after Homer. Black people are depicted in Greek art. Egypt, Libya, and “Aethiopia” are frequently referenced in ancient writings. As the Black classics scholar Frank Snowden Jr. wrote in the 1970s, at least one of the characters in The Odyssey, Eurybates, is specifically described as “black-skinned and woolly-haired.” As the Stanford classics professor Sarah Derbew notes in her book Untangling Blackness in Greek Antiquity, Black people are referenced in plays by Euripides, Sophocles, and Aeschylus. They also appear in the writings of Hesiod and Herodotus. One of the lost epic poems is The Aethiopis, in which Memnon, the Aethiopian king and an ally to Troy, plays a major role.

Why Aren’t There More Imax 70mm Screens for ‘The Odyssey’? variety.com/2026/film/ne...
Sources at Imax confirmed to Varietythat many of the parts needed to build these specialized film projectors "simply no longer exist." The original design files were created roughly half a century ago, but as Gelfond alludes to, they were never properly maintained. As a result, Imax no longer has a complete manufacturing blueprint — and much like the lost tribal knowledge of the Apollo-era spacecraft, very few engineers working today fully understand the systems.

Immediate banger.
was standing at the corner of Ninety
third and Broadway, scanning an empty storefront for signs of literary activity, when Colson Whitehead texted:
"Behind you." It was a clear May afternoon. Whitehead had invited me to his office but specified only the intersection; spinning around, I spotted a dreadlocked figure in shades and a suède jacket, slouched on a bench in the median. Once I'd crossed, he rose to greet me, revealing, on the seat, a plaque that read "Colson Whitehead's Office." He cracked a smile. "Got it for my birthday last November," he said. "No urine or dead animals yet."
