I don't know how people find these random old posts, but sometimes they find a winner. Yesterday someone liked this 2+ year old image and it let me see it again. Look at baby Colin Robinson.

My first year of teaching, I had a class that was out for control. I was so desperate, I grabbed FotR off the shelf, turned to this page, and sang it to them. They were stunned into silence, and I got to move on with my lesson.

A first today: students were concerned that copyright notices meant they weren't allowed to cite an academic source. Kudos to them for being careful and respectful of sources! I'll have to add that to my lessons.

The school's ipads have parental controls, which is fine. Except the parental controls block every outbound link from Google Scholar. Which is a bit of a problem when my students are doing research.

I don’t think HAVE to say that “sold a story” is, itself, selling a story, right? And it’s the oldest and most boring story in education. Education professionals don’t know what they’re talking about, and you just can’t trust the schools. When you’re doing a 2nd season, YOU’RE the one selling.

I was so wiped out today that I came home and just collapsed on the couch for two hours. Couldn't even bring myself to contemplate making lunch. I had chore goals, but all I managed was watering the plants. Maybe tomorrow will be better.

Hey yeah, friendly reminder that men denying or minimizing the work of women and taking credit for it themselves happens so much we have a NAME for it. (It’s the Matilda Effect.) 2nd fun fact: I’ve written many bios of women in STEM at this point and this is *always a factor in their history*

In 1838, the Governor of the territory of Florida proposed "Let Us Alone" as the state motto. Governor Moseley was a slaveowner and wanted to tell Washington to, well, "leave us alone." It was not ratified. The state has put that motto on drivers's licenses. floridapolitics.com/archives/823...

#PairedTexts 1. Why Schools Need a Phonics-Style Reckoning for Math by Matt Yglesias, not a math teacher. (www.the74million.org/article/why-...) 2. Emily Hanford's Story Was Basically Wrong by Michael Pershan, a math teacher. (pershmail.substack.com/p/emily-hanf...)
At this point, everyone who cares about education policy at all has probably listened to Emily Hanford’s “Sold a Story” podcast series, or pretends to have, and is aware that there is a correct way to teach children to read and also a different way that dominated education schools for a generation. There are now many state- and city-level pushes to institute correct instructional practices grounded in “the science of reading,” and the main question is about how declarative policies relate to actual practice rather than what the practice should look like. The Story is Systems, Not Ideas
Hanford’s series assigns a tremendous amount of power to a specific idea. If only!

If there was just one core belief shaping bad teaching, there would be such an easy, obvious path forward. You’d have to change people’s minds. You could mandate trainings. You could ban antiquated beliefs from education schools. You could pass laws requiring teachers to go through good-belief training.

But, alas, none of that will work.
