I was raised by a nurse with an associates degree and a steel mill electrician. I am not denigrating the value and dignity of blue collar work when I ask how many elite national media staffers are raising future bricklayers themselves. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...

i think the real, good faith criticism of FIRE is specifically that its college free speech rankings (and deplatforming database) are a complete mess with no real grounding in objective metrics, and yet they reflect a massive percentage of FIRE's contribution to the public discourse. 🧵

I really think a lot of people underestimate the damage done to society by the conviction that, no matter what product we want, it should be delivered to us in a matter of hours.

“Most Americans are pro-immigrant,” Talarico says. “Throughout US history, immigrants have always made us richer and stronger.” Trump's barbarities have opened the way to a new consensus. Talarico is giving voice to it in moral language that Dems can learn from. 5/5 newrepublic.com/article/2160...

@jonathanbernstein.bsky.social wrote a while back that there was such a low threshold for getting a Republican scandal claim on Fox News that people weren't bothering to do basic research on them before trying them out, and I think we're seeing a great example of that today

🤡 Schmitt beclowns himself 🤡 Schmitt concocted an elaborate conspiracy theory that Smith traveled to Atl for a Hawks game and to collude with Fani Willis, & flashed his "evidence" before accusing Smith of perjury. There's just one problem -- his facts were totally wrong. Here's the whole sequence:

10/17/23 is specifically the date of the al-Ahli hospital bombing when the IDF killed upwards of 500 Palestinian civilians. Western media collectively agreed that it was prudent to cast doubt on the reported casualty figures, so "Hamas-run ministry of health" became a thing.

Tony Soprano, not in the sense that he’s a great character (although he is) but in how authentic it is that he understands he’s a bad man and claims to be looking for redemption but is actually just looking for someone who will tell him there’s a way to stay this way and be good

In practice, AI literacy doesn’t start with building the tool for your personal use. It starts with understanding yourself as a collection of tasks who should subcontract those out to a machine. Almost no regular person’s life currently exists as such.

Did Anthropic's Claude discover something new in biotech? Well, just like with those recent alleged math proofs, it looks like it was given the answers in advance from real humans doing actual research. (gift: www.nytimes.com/2026/09/27/s...)
Dr. Mestre and his colleagues have yet to publish their findings. But for the past three years, they have regularly used Anthropic’s A.I. models as they have written code, drafted manuscripts and performed other tasks.

In doing so, Dr. Mestre said he and colleagues shared key findings about the enzymes with Anthropic.Anthropic said that Claude’s key contribution was identifying an array of RNA molecules and a protein associated with reverse transcriptase in a system. But Dr. Mestre said that he and his colleagues had made that discovery over a year ago.

It's a two-way breakdown - from policy to people has also failed, rendering the entire 'political cybernetic mechanism' non-functional. At this point, the majority of the electorate does not actually understand what a policy even is, it's all jiet "President has magic Good Economy button on desk"

We did this cycle once already. We muddled through after Jan 6, a near-constitutional crisis, then guaranteed we would be in for an even more serious assault on democracy. Because we showed people in DC who had tried to use political violence subvert an election that there would be no consequences.

A black and white drawing of three dachshunds arranged vertically, each holding a different optical illusion object in its mouth, and the dogs themselves drawn as if a single line optical illusion. The top dog holds a Penrose triangle, the middle dog holds a Necker cube, and the bottom dog holds a Penrose trident. The dogs’ bodies are elongated in an exaggerated cartoon style. The artwork is signed “@IndieTheIntrovert” in the bottom right corner.
