But there is also medical perspective in the project: leukemia cells with similar genetics can respond very differently to therapy. The Flury is testing the hypothesis whether disrupted transmission of regulatory information could contribute to this diversity, and possibly to treatment resistance. 💊

Methods development: The challenge is that most analyses average over many cells in every phase of the cell cycle at once – so short-lived effects get lost. The team is developing more sensitive methods that work even with very small cell samples. ⚙️

Two layers are involved: Epigenetic marks on chromatin control which parts of the DNA are accessible. Chemical marks on RNA (epitranscriptome) influence how RNA is processed, how stable it is, and how active it is. The team wants to understand how these two systems interact across the cell cycle. 🤔

When a cell divides, it passes on more than its DNA. Its daughter cells also need to know which genes to use. How is this regulatory information handed down, and what happens when it isn't? This is the focus of new project in the Flury lab. 🧵🧬

The curtain rises on gene activation: a molecular illustration of transcription, the process by which cells “read” their genes.
