Cat
Midnight, a large black cat with yellow eyes and black toe beans lays on his side at the corner of the bed. A hand is scratching his head while he stares straight into the camera. His ears are pointed straight out to either side and right at the bottom of his face there is a large pink blep coming out of his mouth.

Perfection.

The Extreme Sentences Handed to Anti-ICE Protesters Should Terrify Us All
The sentences, ranging from 30-100 years, are part of an increasingly disturbing pattern of the Trump administration criminalizing speech and assembly.

Deepfakes are everywhere, but digital forensics investigators are fighting back. Learn more: scim.ag/42dMPBg
To verify images, digital forensics investigators will often check whether the geometry of the scene is realistic. In a real photo, lines that run parallel in reality—like floor tiles—should meet at a single vanishing point. In this image, however, the dotted lines do not meet in a single point, indicating it is a fake.
Image: an AI-generated image of soldiers marching down a hallway in three lines, wearing fatigues and carrying rifles. Four dotted white lines have been added over the image, running along the floor tiles visible in the foreground and extending back to where the vanishing point should be, behind the soldiers. Instead of meeting in a single point, the lines all cross at different points.Investigators also examine reflections. The lines connecting points on an object to matching points in its mirror image run parallel in reality, so similarly should meet at a vanishing point. In this image, the lines again do not converge on one point, revealing it to be a fake.
Image: An AI-generated image of a plastic cartoon dinosaur toy with its reflection visible in a small mirror. Four dotted white lines are layered over the image, connecting points on the toy with the same points on its reflection: the top of its eye, the end of its jaw, its hand, and its foot. The lines extend out to the side of the image, where they all cross at different points rather than meeting at a single point.Shadows can be a giveaway, too. Because the Sun is so far away, its rays are essentially parallel when they reach Earth's surface. That means that the lines connecting points on an object to the shadows they cast in sunlight should also intersect at a vanishing point. In this Al-generated image, that is clearly not the case.
Image: An AI-generated image of colorful, semi-transparent plastic cubes arranged in a group in a city plaza. Six dotted white lines are layered over the image, connecting corners of several cubes with the corresponding corners in their shadows. The lines extend upward off the edge of the image, toward where a vanishing point should be. Three of them converge on roughly the same point, but two extend further, and one cuts across all the others at an angle.

This is one of the best pieces of pop culture writing I've read in the past couple of years. These excerpts are great but you need to read how the build to that last one. Goddamn. Thank you @awalrusdarkly.bsky.social and @popheist.com
I hate predicting what will happen in a story.

I like thinking about what will happen, sure, and I like analyzing how each piece of the story contributes to the greater whole when all is said and done, but if you ask me "Who's gonna be the new King of Westeros?" or "Who's the killer in this season of True Detective?" or even "Will Captain America say 'Avengers Assemble'?" I am simply, deeply, almost obsessively uninterested. I just want to let the story tell me what it's gonna be.

This view, unfortunately, is incompatible with vast swaths of modern fandom, whether we're talking about Star Wars, The White Lotus, or the reason we're here today: The Pitt. Fandom — and I'm using the term very generally here, so if this doesn't describe you, please assume you can go about your business — is obsessed not just with what will happen, but with what should happen, and while there's nothing wrong with playing detective while watching your favorite shows, at a certain point it all gets a bit poisonous.Poisonous for who? Well, I hate to sound like your high-and-mighty Nerd Dad here but A) I kinda am, and B) for you. It's poisonous for you, the person out there trying to get the most out of stories you enjoy in a world that keeps paring movies, TV, books, comics, and more down to the barest algorithmic essentials in favor of ratings and ticket sales rather than narrative. In an age when social media fandom has demonstrably tipped the scales for various creative decisions ranging from Sonic's teeth to the Snyder Cut, we risk losing whatever substance mass-produced media has left because we're too obsessed with plot and not obsessed enough with story. The Pitt is not the first case of this happening, but it is the latest and the loudest, so allow me to make this as simple as I can:

The Story Owes You Nothing.Fiction really is a form of magic. Every book you've ever read, every film you've ever seen, every comic book you've ever slipped from a spinner rack is an exercise in concentrated will imposed by its creators on a creative medium and then, finally, on to you as a reader or viewer. It's not there to be second-guessed. It's there to take you places, draw out emotions, and leave you with a head full of ideas that weren't there before. Like Hunter S. Thompson said: Buy the ticket, take the ride. Let a story happen to you rather than second-guessing every plot point in favor of some imagined version you'd rather have and will never get to see (unless you write fanfic, which is an entirely different can of worms beyond the scope of this essay). Allow yourself the luxury of putting down your accounts book and your checklist and expecting something, and simply be open to anything. Do that, and not only will the stories get better, but you'll understand them better and feel them more.

The story owes you nothing, but if you let it, it will give you everything.
