There is no solar power crisis. No wind power crisis. No insulation crisis. No heat pump crisis. No e-bike crisis. No electric bus crisis. But there is a #fossilfuel crisis. And a #climatecrisis.

Letter to the editor in today's ODT
Importance of words: in the advertisement featuring Shane Jones some miscreant has inserted a redundant preposition into the legend "NZ First delivers [ for ] Otago" which quite distorts the true meaning of Jones's endeavours - Harry Love North East Valley

Wow, when you lie so much that there are consequences. Not included in the correction of course, is the fact that (as reported here) the Ipsos survey “showed more respondents supported than opposed a number of new taxes, including a significant majority in favour of a wealth tax".

Used to be you could catch the train from Dunedin (or Invercargill) to Christchurch, it would drop you off at the dock in Lyttleton in time to catch the overnight ferry to Wellington

what about Australian state payroll taxes? - they pay for state things like roads, police, teachers etc, and they effectively depress wages (they are paid by an employer off the top of your wage), here in NZ these same things come out of income tax

Paul Campbell @moonbaseotago.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I suspect that this doesn't include state taxes in some countries (like payroll taxes in Oz, and income/sales taxes in US states), or separate taxes for retirement (like in the US), but in NZ it includes everything

At 16 I went on a French student exchange in Tahiti, my family wasn't that well off it was very expensive, so I took the train and ferry to Auckland, including the overnight train up the NI, no sleeper for me - it stopped at every station, no one slept, we played cards (with strangers) the whole way

Unsurprisingly, @slanecartoon.bsky.social was on to this almost 20 years ago, in 2007. #nzpol
A cartoon by Chris Slane (slanecartoon.com). It shows: on the left, a grey haired white man sitting behind a wooden desk with a curved window behind him. On a sofa to the right, two people are sitting: a man in a blue suit and a woman wearing a red jacket. The man is saying, “Minister, to avoid F.O.I. requests all our advice will be in sign language.” The cartoon shows the woman is moving her hands in different ways as she translates that statement into sign language. The face of the man behind the desk looks disconcerted and worried.

So this is good for farmers and other exporters the sort of thing you might do in an election year to shore up your base if you were a right wing government. It also means that for ordinary people the cost of imported goods will go up look on the supermarket shelves to see just how much are imports

The sombre conclusion to Thomas Coughlan's review of 'Dirty Work' in the Herald, which dwells on the way the book relies on sources rather than documents. www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/...
The most compelling thing the book may say is about journalism itself. There’s little doubt the ugly tactics Hager has revealed in previous books persist. But advances in encryption and data security make leaking large troves of correspondence increasingly difficult and traceable.

The bigger question posed by books like this isn’t so much whether Dirty Politics goes on, but whether we’ll continue to find out about it.
