#urgency I have spend days of this term debating bills or vast amendments that have bypassed select committee - any scrutiny limited to questions opposition MPs ask before government back benchers close the debate. Bad.👇 from Hipkins 🙌 Any bill under urgency will have post enactment review! #nzpol

Interested in how Labour would improve National’s RMA replacement bills? Have a look in the Post. Since the interview the Minister has introduced huge amendments to enable more pollution. Bad. This week we will be in the House. My aim is to do better for both efficiency and for our environment.

Sigh. Rushed changes to National’s fast track at Christmas included the ability for Ministers to decree activities meet the test to enter the fast track process. At the time it was all about supermarkets. Now it’s mines. Typical. Matches plans to open public conservation lands to “development”.

A circular economy is much more than recycling
NZ generates huge volumes of waste and recovers only a tiny amount. A circular economy would be a way to redesign systems, cut emissions and build resilience.

So, we knew it was bad — undemocratic expedited process, dodgy retrospectivity and objectionable nullification of claims. But this shows it was doubly worse — a calculated and deliberate ambush to deprive claimants and a policy fait accompli.

Nb Labour replaced RMA with Spatial Planning & Natural & Built Environment Acts removing non-complying activity status (which appears to be the issue here with threshold tests not met). Yes those laws would have taken time to implement. But better than what National has done - repeal & revert to RMA
