It’s pretty clear at this point that algorithmic social media makes my life worse. It’s addictive and distracting and has actually done a lot of harm societally as a whole. Beyond that, the biggest Silicon Valley projects were NFTs, Crypto, & the Metaverse. Huge resource sucks providing nothing

Sort of insane fact about how broken US urban planning is—America now spends more building *just the lights for roads and highways* than on all subways & ground mass transit combined Spending on roadway *pavement* is 18x transit spending

*so important*: if you’re voting by mail, assume the USPS will delay because it’s its policy. You can: —put it in drop box —go to counter to watch them postmark in front of you —if you’re dropping it in a mailbox, do it VERY EARLY.

yeah, and I think we'll have to start sending kids to brain gym young (like 5 or 6), obviously with age & developmentally appropriate brain workout content that they can work up through in, like, graded levels with qualified brain fitness instructors.

In exciting Midwest passenger rail news, starting today Amtrak's Borealis now runs with 4 Superliner coaches instead of 3, adding 75 more seats. Dash 8-32BWH #518 is on the rear of the first 4 car run, passing Imniza Ska slightly behind schedule.
A passenger train lit by the sunset. At the head is GE P42DC #54, behind it are 4 silver bilevel passenger cars, each with a red, white, and blue stripe. At the rear is a strange angular locomotive, a GE Dash 8-32BHW. Behind the train a steep wooded hillside rises, and above it are patchy clouds lit by last light.

Another entry for the "impact fee nexus studies are bullshit" file! Student enrollment at LA Unified has fallen for 24 years straight, ~48%. And yet! We have an impact fee because: "As new development occurs, additional school facilities will be needed to house the growth in the student population."
A screenshot from the Los Angeles Unified School District 2026 School Impact Fee Justification Study. The text reads: "Education Code Section 17620 allows school districts to assess fees on new residential and
commercial construction within their respective boundaries. These fees can be collected without
special city or county approval, to fund the construction of school facilities necessitated by the
impact of residential and commercial development activity. In addition, these fees can also be used
to fund the reconstruction of school facilities to accommodate students generated from new
development projects. Fees are collected immediately prior to the time of the issuance of a building
permit by the City or the County.
As new development occurs, additional school facilities will be needed to house the growth in the
student population. Because of the high cost associated with constructing school facilities and the
District’s limited budget, outside funding sources are required for future school construction. State
and local funding sources for the construction and/or reconstruction of school facilities are limited."

Residential: $5.38
Commercial/industrial: $0.87
Rental Self Storage: $0.32

@pmeyers7.bsky.social and @tobiasharris.bsky.social make very good points here. One of the reasons we are in the quagmire we are in is because the antisocial nihilism or "edgelord" culture of 4chan more or less won the war to define large chunks of Internet culture back in 2013-2014 against Tumblr.

This is the way. Passing something called "rent control" is extremely politically popular. Channel that popularity into good, non-harmful policy with an anti-gouging law that allows modest increases, stability for existing tenants, and a reset to market rate when tenant leaves (vacancy decontrol).

Possibly this was also true in the past, but one thing I think is perhaps peculiar to modern life is the extreme intrusion of opportunity cost. I was reading Marguerite Abouet's wonderful series "Aya" and she describes how in the 1970s in Ivory Coast, when you had a baby, all women came to help.

I'm thankful Minnesota has a strong commitment to local journalism bc it's vital to commit these stories to a public record broader than just 1 lawsuit. And nice of the author to make me sound more professional by not using the bit where I said ICE officers would need instructions written in crayon
On the morning of Sept. 25, Alejandro was brought to the Whipple building, given his belongings and told he was being released.

Alejandro got a few steps farther than Ivan would. He made it outside the building’s front doors.

That’s where plain clothes immigration agents were waiting to handcuff him.

“One of the agents translated for me, saying just like they could release me, they could arrest me again,” Alejandro said in Spanish.

“It's bullshit,” Suitor said. “We won the case.”

Even then, I feel like rote "go out in nature" advice can be rather lonely. imho a lot of the contemporary neature-scene is structured around individually consuming equipment, experiences, or the places themselves -- and still doesn't really solve the "my life feels empty" probelm

I find history important -- moreso than social science -- b/c of its emphasis on finding narrative, and focuses on contexts and contingencies particular to a situation. Social science is useful, but I think can feel effacing, and denying of agency, in its generalizations
