I called this last year, and the paradox grinds at me. The fact is that even most 1st or 2nd generation Americans know diddly shit about US immigration policy, let alone others. But it's also a fact that our immigration system selects for a lot of people who dream of becoming Republican. Or did.

Now that the first phase of @hcrichardson.bsky.social's wonderful "250 to 250" project has wrapped, I'll share all the videos (one per day) for which I wrote scripts. Some were recorded nearly word for word; others underwent much-needed editing for clarity & brevity. Tonight: the CCC.

Korea solved the same "汉子 No Work For Us" problem by just making its own Hiragana-esque alphabet (Hangul) and having everything conform to that rather than spread across 3 systems.

Genuinely think we would be better off if we had an English word for Wissenschaft. Best I’ve come up with is to use the word “inquiry” in this way.

Alas it's worth noting that if a state changed their drinking age to below 21, they would only lose 8% of their highway appropriations. A decent chunk of "highway" dollars actually go to funding sustainable alternatives to driving (laudatory) ...

For fiscal year 2012 and each fiscal year thereafter, the amount to be withheld under this section shall be an amount equal to 8 percent of the amount apportioned to the noncompliant State, as described in subparagraph (A), under paragraphs (1) and (2) of section 104(b).

617 days into his 2nd term, Trump's Department of Transportation has *still* not approved a single new transit project for full funding. The problems I highlighted in March—how this lack of funding only makes projects cost more & delays completion—have only worsened www.urban.org/urban-wire/r...
There have been no approvals for new transit projects in the entire 2nd Trump Administration. This graph, produced in March 2026, remains accurate now, in September 2026.

Marvel comics are usually about New York, but DC comics are about The City in a more general sense. The City as imagined by the early 20th century. The site of American life. And they're all supposed to be recognizable in some way while not being *specific*

Selfishly, part of my "why" in urban planning is personal: when I grow older, I want to preserve my independence, dignity, and mobility. By building better cities with abundant transit and housing, we create an accessible world—not just for our future selves, but for generations yet to come.

A field can be socially indispensable and poorly remunerated because of existing institutional arrangements—social work and education are obvious examples of this. Then, circularly, that low remuneration is cited as evidence that educating people to perform the work is a bad financial investment.

This is one advantage of the pub or the Italian-style all day cafe with plenty of seating. You order at the bar, you take a corner, you share space if it gets crowded, and you service yourself, within reason.

My sense is most people think the causality runs the other direction (lack of third spaces increasing division) but my thinking is that it actually runs the other direction, and decreasing social consensus eroded viable third spaces. I think it’s a symptom, not the cause.

I think there's a matter of the relative cost of hanging out in a third space - for ex. not all bars are equal, and if there's a town pricey enough that it can't really support a staid dive bar with a base $2.50-$3.00 draft (ahem, Ann Arbor), then that makes it more difficult to just Hang Out there
