Had a good soak about a week ago but none since and none in any serious forecast, this is still a drought. So here's another rain poem, this one was published by @moistpoetryjournal.bsky.social a while ago.
Backstage

When nightrain comes the water creatures play.
They are not the song of garbage can lids
nor will they dance in the lights of cars.
They find hidden alleys, lost yards.
Abandonment pleases them.
They sing in secret,
praise and preen long gray bodies,
dance for the sweet mud,
wonder what lives
behind dark windows,
swear up hard oaths of thunder,
own it all.

First poem I'll be sharing from "It's Easy to Lose Your Breath" is "After the Start of Summer", which you can find at @moistpoetryjournal.bsky.social. There's also a short author's note. Thank you to @hanvanderhart.bsky.social and all the other editors for including this poem!
After the Start of Summer

The lake blooms a bright green more vivid than geckos.
When these blooms enter the household, it’s only natural
to collect them, place them in a glass vase, burn eyes
with pollen. Pink and orange petals flutter onto the table.

They say that algae blooms mean an overabundance
of phosphorus. It’s toxic.

We drink up facts, reap the consequences, even when
it’s not our fault. I am a wooden raft headed down
the river after a heavy rain. The water’s thick there.

I hope to make my way out of this sand trap
through storm into sunlight, no longer
hidden by mattress-stuffing clouds in
the endless overcast that is November.

Made good on my effort to try this one. Went an unexpected direction. Apparently my life is a rupture. Happy with this as my poem to #PoetryMonth today, though.
IT'S TODAY, AGAIN
Everything is connected, but nothing is working.
The rhododendrons, for instance, unexpected purple, sending you back to bull thistles
in another state where even April can sweat through its shirt, the low places filled with water, frogs, turtles. Dragonflies, iridescent, clinging to each other in the reeds like they know
something about brevity and passion, how wings reflect sun in the sunlight, absence
in the shadows. You are learning a woman the way April learns a field, how she wants to be kissed, captured, pinned and preserved, photographed, sepia toned. The desert
before it knows what it's about to do, a flat patience,
inside a two week long explosion that comes every year, before the brightness of summer and the yellow of Spanish broom reminding you of forsythia and the geese that went overhead this morning, one bad wheel on a shopping cart, already somewhere else|
by the time you look up. The road stretches between the softball tournament and home and the place by the river where you stopped
for Blue Moon ice cream, dish soap blue, dish soap taste that also carries bubblegum and joy without knowing what's ahead. You ask Am I doing it right? The rhododendrons blush and open, like you, like the woman, in complete silence. You photograph them anyway. The cruise control holds and then releases. You step on the gas, you see, it doesn't matter. You're still going somewhere.

this is of course my representative sample
you know the color of their eyes it's already too late / 26

a follow-up to december 20th, when you
asked me what I thought your voice sounded like

at the time
I said your voice was
soft
with sleepy, purring undertones

what I meant to say
(because it takes a minute to find better words)
is that your voice comes
as a secret

the kind of early summer rain
that slips in at two in the morning
not nearly loud enough
to wake anyone up

you only sort of hear it near the window
when you get up to use the toilet
when you get up to get some water
and you think no

no
it's too soft
it's not warm enough
if it was real I would've heard it

but it's thereif you know the color of their eyes it's already too late / 27

it's there and you almost miss it
because you expect something this magical
to be bold in the telling

but no. to really hear it
you'd have to just be outside for it
and so you put on the first pair of shoes you can find
and you stumble outside, still half-asleep

and then it's *unmistakable*

you feel it nestle into your hair
pressed by the warm may breeze
you hear the wind talking faster
like it's trying to flirt with you but doesn't know how

you breathe in
and it tastes exactly like you'd expect it to
full of petrichor and top soil
and always a secret third thing

but also something else
a kind of sweetness from before they put sugar in everything
a nuanced texture from a country that only knew hardtack
until you came along

and the worst part
is you only hear it
when you're the only one awake
and no one would believe you in the morning

but you can't pretend it wasn't there
you can't pretend it didn't happen
so you tuck it into your pocket
for safekeeping

still warm
still wet
still a gentle staccato
that you fall asleep toif you know the color of their eyes it's already too late / 28

eventually
and later, it becomes a story you tell yourself
a reminder that you heard it, and still hear it
a small and necessary comfort
