"Love Poem Written on the Eve of the Apocalypse" in DMQ Review 🖤
Love Poem Written on the Eve of the Apocalypse, by Sarah Mills

Everyone talks about the apocalypse like it's all zombies and asteroids, but nobody mentions the quiet parts. Here I am, kissing your microplastic lips, pulling ash from your soft hair. I tried to be a minimalist because I knew how suffocating the landfills would feel at the end of the world. I became obsessed with letting go, throwing away things I needed, practical things like a hammer. The sky is cleaved open, its insides shining like the pipes from an organ I saw on a curb outside a church. I wondered if it could still make music. Your irises are glowing from staring at the radioactive Milky Way, its purple stars wetting your cheeks. Did we have enough time to do all the things we loved? I took so many long drives with my car packed and the windows down, trying to escape Sadness, the name of my shadow. The feeling of aloneness pressing against my face—or was that just the wind? What struck me was that I still had so much room for hope. I paid for it like an extra carry-on, lugged it through the squeaky halls of my life on broken wheels, its contents spilling out. I held each item like a favorite sweater or beloved book, running my hand over it the way I am grazing your cheek now, burning red like embers. I love this one, I said so many times, stuffing it back in, deciding to keep it.

I have a new prose poem "I Blame the Planets" in the beautiful new DMQ Review. The issue also features an in memoriam featured of @jpdancingbear.bsky.social's work, along with poems from @renee-emerson.bsky.social, @sarahmillswrites.bsky.social & other great writers. www.dmqreview.com/vorreyerf26
I Blame the Planets,

though I don’t understand them, even poor relegated Pluto, who has vanished from the old mnemonic memory song so that now My Very Educated Mother Just Serves Us Noodles instead of Nine Pizzas. No matter. Astrologers say that those bulbous spheres are at fault for all my troubles. Who am I to argue when my car’s battery dies beneath a flock of shitting pigeons on a cold day and the windows fog from the steam of my breath while I wait for a tow truck? I curse those damn globules of gas and rock until I remember how lovely Earth looks from space, its oceans and cloud garments, its swirling. I can’t stay mad for long, at least at Earth. Or Mercury. I wish it would clap back, rain asteroids on our heads every time someone says retrograde to explain their misfortunes. It’s not Mercury’s fault, hung on the sky like an ornament, gazing out at its backyard of stars. I understand what it’s like—to take the blame, to have no voice.

I love that my kid (who is 33) is discovering how GOOD movies were in the 70s. He just watched Thief, and it blew his mind. He's also lucky to have a local theater in his city that shows older restored films, so he gets to see them in a theater sometimes.

      I haven’t
slipped into a church since my wedding, but sadness
and coincidence have left me hungry. Something more

than crumbs of fake bread, thimbles of I’m so lonely
wine. I still have questions. Who really gets filled

on their best friend’s body and blood alone?

I have been returning to the play and experimentation that I so enjoyed when I first started painting, and now I remember why it's so good for me to focus on process and not worry about whether something is “good." Today I experimented with different brush strokes and blends and had a blast.

Working on a new painting and I can't decide whether it's "done." So different from writing - if I change a poem, I can always change it back to the original version. But if I add something to a painting, it's not easy to get it back to the place it used to be.

Partial Autobiography in Three Parts

I.

Once a daisy was a microphone, and I sang into its petaled star. I had a knack for hiding in the pantry with my books. An orchid for a barrette and an erratic longing.

A lollipop stickied my knuckles, purpled my lips. Once I fished an apple from a barrel and triumphed with my mouth. The car was an airplane with arms for wings, my right arm, my brother's left. A string was a cat's cradle. A string held a worm that was death to a fish. A string was tied around my loose tooth. A string hung from my mother's apron, and I clung to it for dear life.
