Located in Ichinoseki, Iwate Prefecture, Genbi-kei Gorge—designated a Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument of Japan—stretches for two kilometers along the Iwai River.
Winding through a rugged chasm of water-sculpted stone, the turquoise waters of the Iwai River carve a dramatic path framed by a brilliant autumn canopy. On the right, fiery beech and maple leaves glow in shades of russet, copper, and vermilion, creating a vivid counterpoint to the deep green pines clinging to the dark, mossy rock faces on the left. A soft, silvery mist settles over the distant bend of the ravine, partially shrouding a narrow suspension bridge in atmospheric haze. The scene evokes a vivid sensory atmosphere: the cool, sharp autumn air of Iwate Prefecture, the roaring spray of rushing white water, the earthy scent of damp basalt and fallen leaves, and the quiet reverence of a secluded mountain gorge.
Carved out over millennia through the erosion of volcanic tuff, the ravine is celebrated for its dramatic rock formations, cascading rapids, and unusual cylindrical potholes (ketsugun) worn smooth by tumbling pebbles. Historically, the gorge was admired by Date Masamune, the legendary warlord and founder of the Sendai Domain, who praised its raw, untamed beauty as equal to the famed pine-clad islands of Matsushima. Beyond its dramatic geography, Genbi-kei is famous for its delightful local heritage, including flying dango (Kakko Dango), where teahouse orders of fresh rice dumplings and green tea are sent gliding across the canyon to visitors in a wooden basket suspended on a cable high above the water.

Located in the Taihaku Ward of Sendai, Japan, Akiu Great Falls is widely celebrated as one of Japan’s most majestic waterfalls and a designated Place of Scenic Beauty.
Framed by a delicate arbor of snow-draped branches glowing with cool indigo light, Akiu Great Falls (Akiu Ōtaki) cascades through a frozen gorge in Sendai's mountainous western rim. Heavy winter frost encases every twig and bough in pristine white yukisheshō ("snow makeup"), forming a crystalline lattice over the dark basalt cliffs. Below, the churning waters of the Natori River plunge into a deep, shadowed basin, captured in a silky, luminous blur that contrasts against the static, frozen landscape. The scene evokes an intimate winter sensory atmosphere: the biting, clear mountain air of Miyagi Prefecture, the muffled roar of rushing water echoing within the snow-insulated canyon, the clean scent of frozen hemlock and wet stone, and the deep stillness that settles over the valley during a heavy snowfall.
Plummeting 55 meters into the river canyon below, the falls serve as the natural crowning jewel of the Akiu region, famous for its historic hot springs (Akiu Onsen) which have drawn visitors—including the legendary feudal warlord Date Masamune—for over fifteen centuries. This wilderness landscape embodies Sendai’s enduring identity as Mori no Miyako ("The City of Trees"), where refined culture seamlessly yields to untamed forests and rugged mountain gorges.

Owl of the Day: Spectacled Owl 📷 William Orellana
Photo of owl perched on a branch, description from ebird: ‘Uncommon but unmistakable. Very large spectacular owl of humid evergreen forest in tropical lowlands and foothills. Often roosts at low to middle levels, usually well hidden in shady spots, and flushes easily. At night, favors open forest canopy and forest edge, but calling birds can be well hidden in foliage. Song is a resonant, pulsating series of deep hoots, sounding rather like a sheet of metal being flexed quickly; an uncommon variant call of the Mottled Owl sounds rather similar.’

Steps leading to a temple in Noboriro, Japan.
Ascending into the atmospheric stillness of the night, a grand covered stone stairway (Noborirō) climbs steeply beneath a rhythmic timber arcade. Lined along every stone step, small square paper lanterns cast a soft, candlelight glow across the weathered flags, while iconic oval paper lanterns (chōchin) hang suspended from the heavy wooden ceiling beams above. The warm, amber radiance filters through white washi paper, carving an illuminated path through the surrounding darkness. The stark contrast between the coarse, unpainted timber posts, the smooth stone steps, and the gentle, flickering halos of light creates a deeply tactile sensory atmosphere: the cool night air of the mountain, the faint aroma of incense drifting from above, and the hushed, reverent stillness of a sacred ascent.
Located at Hase-dera in Sakurai, Nara Prefecture, this famous 399-step covered corridor—known as the Noborirō (登廊)—was originally erected in 1039 by Chinen, a priest of Kasuga Taisha Shrine, in gratitude for a miraculous healing. Functioning as the primary pilgrimage approach from the Niomon Gate to the temple's National Treasure Main Hall (Hondō), the stairway features three distinct sections hung with unique oval "Hase-style" lanterns. During special evening illuminations such as the annual Kannon Mantōe (Ten Thousand Lantern Ceremony), hundreds of lanterns are lit to guide pilgrims toward the temple's 10-meter gilded Eleven-Faced Kannon statue.

Japanese graffiti ,Shibuya, Tokyo
Painted directly onto a textured, off-white stucco exterior wall, this urban mural blurs the boundary between traditional decorative painting and contemporary street art. At its center, a painted vertical hanging scroll (kakejiku) rendered in ochre and earth tones displays a delicate study of crimson plum blossoms (koubai). In a clever trompe-l'œil illusion, gnarled plum branches burst outward beyond the scroll's visual borders, trailing pale pink blooms across the rough plaster. To the left, a modern outdoor water heater—bearing a swift, black marker tag—and exposed utility piping create a sharp, tactile contrast against the organic elegance of the painted flora. The scene evokes a distinct urban sensory atmosphere: the cool air of a Shibuya backstreet, the coarse grain of weathered stucco, and the quiet surprise of encountering seasonal beauty mounted beside industrial utility.
Situated within the alleyways of Shibuya, this piece exemplifies Tokyo's evolving street art landscape, where classical Japanese artistic motifs (kachō-ga, or flower-and-bird genre painting) are recontextualized on concrete and plaster. Traditionally, the kakejiku was displayed inside a home's tokonoma (display alcove) to mark seasonal transitions; here, the mural democratizes the alcove, bringing seasonal contemplation out into the public sphere. The plum blossom (ume) holds deep historical significance as the first flower to bloom amidst late-winter cold, symbolizing endurance, courage, and spiritual renewal.

GenAI is what I am going to optimistically call "pre-systemic" - it hasn't been baked in yet. And the stakes are HIGH, bc once baked in, the climate impacts push it up into a high category among the plastics industry, agriculture etc So....what that means is that heavy users *are* morally culpable

The trope I see **all the time** is 'this is just like when they stopped using plastic straws' or 'this is like when BP tried to do carbon footprint stuff' But using fossil fuels or single use plastic is *very* different to using GenAI to produce an image, or make a website, or write code

There's a real thing on Insta and Threads about the ongoing intense debate around personal vs corporate vs systemic responsibility when fighting, eg, climate or against GenAI. But GenAI is so unique: it barely existed 3 years ago; we all lived our lives normally. Yet heavy use still gets excused?
