The media is compromised in many ways. It’s stuffed full of tech optimists who want to believe the narratives of industry figures, alongside people who crave access above all else and know their bread is buttered by staying in the industry’s pocket. But you also have people who really don’t understand digital technology much at all, and certainly not artificial intelligence, so when an influential tech figure is making catastrophic warnings, the tendency is to believe them. After all, they wouldn’t be so wealthy and powerful if they couldn’t be trusted, right? But media also relies on audiences, and the sensationalism of claims that AI could destroy humanity has proven impossible to resist, even for many outlets that should know better.

If the media cared about factuality over sensationalism, it wouldn’t be echoing the lies of the tech industry. Instead it would challenge the self-serving narrative they’re trying to sell to the public. It may seem as though presenting your product as dangerous would be bad for your company, but all it does in practice for AI companies is make them more powerful. Somehow, they’re treated as having the answers to the supposed problems they’re creating, thus shifting the regulatory conversation away from real issues to imagined threats.

There are, however, things we can do, per former FTC Chair Lina Khan, if we actually had any interest in doing so:

There is an extensive set of laws that govern dangerous and defective products. For example, releasing unvetted AI models or agents can violate consumer protection laws. Shipping flawed AI tools without implementing adequate measures to detect and stop rogue or defective AI agents can be an “unfair or deceptive” act or practice under the FTC Act (and analogous state laws). And some state AGs are already exploring holding AI firms and their CEOs criminally liable when their models participate in criminal activity.
If LLMs were a toy, they’d be taken off the shelves. If LLMs were a drug, they would be banned.

I agree that we need to take “AI safely” seriously, but that starts with treating LLMs as normal software run in a reckless and dangerous manner by malevolent entities with little regard for society.

So, headline consensus numbers are easier to find than segment breakdowns, but analysts have the vast majority of Broadcom’s revenue in the next three years coming from AI, with a dramatic amount of that — somewhere between 23% and 52% — coming from Anthropic and OpenAI, with the variance based on the wildly different assumptions based on various different analysts.

Yet this isn’t necessarily-inclusive of Google’s own TPU purchases —- many of which will be rented directly to Anthropic — meaning that there’s likely tens of billions of TPUs sales by proxy that will be contingent on Anthropic’s interest in renting them (or its ability to do so).

In any case, Broadcom’s business is estimated to almost-entirely flatten outside of AI semiconductors by Fiscal Year 2029.

The reason I’m not getting too much deeper into estimates is that it’s hard to get a straight answer out of analysts about what they actually think is going on outside of Anthropic and Google. Some of them believe that Meta is going to be much bigger than OpenAI, while others believe OpenAI will be dropping tens of billions of dollars’ worth of purchases for Jalapeno and beyond in the next three years.

But the one consistently-held belief is that the vast majority — somewhere between 35% and 64% — of Broadcom’s revenue in the next two years will come from both Google and Anthropic, with, as I’ve mentioned, Google’s interest in further TPU sales largely driven by Anthropic’s purchases of compute.

This is the single-riskiest bet that Broadcom has ever made.

I'm sure the next couple days will be crazy, but after things settle down, have you figured out what's next for you?
I mentioned AI 2027 and AI 2040 before. I think these are really interesting predictions of the way the future looks. They're not done by any big labs; these were done externally by researchers that just cared about predicting what the world looks like. These have been very good resources for me and a lot of other researchers for trying to think through the implications of what you're doing.
So I expect to do something like this-some sort of independent commentary on where things are going, at least for the short term before we get some sort of pacing agreement or slowdown. Ilf| it looks like we're not going to rush straight into recursive self-improvement, maybe I'd consider going to an auditing agency or some third-party regulation or transparency agency. But for now, I think I'm just gonna try and take stock of where the situation is.
