Work to rule is the 'value' you get for the money you pay. If you want more, pay more. They didn't complete the previous agreement and they didn't bother setting up anything new.

Value for money, he says? Also, "any new deal that emerges would protect lower-paid workers, who he said did “particularly well out of previous agreements”." Has he missed the bit about inflation crippling people because wages don't keep up?

One of my workplaces is staffed entirely by PhDs. The office kitchen has a sign by the toaster. It reads: Please do not butter bread before placing in toaster. Lemme tell you. Signs like that don’t happen because ONE person did it ONE time.

One of the many joys of supervising a PhD is that it gives you a good excuse to read things you've been meaning to read for ages. Got to round out what has been a hectic week by reading this excellent piece from Jagjeet Lally on Fenians, Islam and anti-imperialism. academic.oup.com/ehr/article/...

The Times doing their usual reframing of a straightforward case of an author and publisher facing the long arm of the law and deciding to stand up for their principles. So naturally, it’s time to speak to an (allegedly) racist author that was so inconvenienced the BBC ran a six-part series on her?
“Times Radio: Sally Rooney could spark ‘purity spiral’ after pulling books from UK shelves over Palestine Action support
Thursday October 15 2026, 10.10am, The Times
Sally Rooney’s decision to pull her works from UK shelves over her previous commitment to donate the proceeds of her book sales to Palestine Action is “unnerving” and could spark a “purity spiral”, says author Kate Clanchy, who received an apology from her publisher four years after her book received an online backlash for alleged racism.”
