Do you think the Mongolian empire was built by women? How about Sumeria? Do you think women directed the building of the fortress city of Uruk?

Again, if there are doubts about how your union (or not) membership data is being collected and used, and whether that is in line with requirements under GDPR, I would suggest contacting the Data Protection Commission. The public sector above all others should be following the law correctly.

Many HR departments, as we all know, act as if they were a law unto themselves and do not abide by regulatory requirements when they can get away with it. It would be good for ALL public sector workers, union members or not, to be aware of how and why etc. their employer is using data against them.

Stephen McCarthy @misterjabsticks.eurosky.social · 22h
In many cases, the employer may not have taken the correct steps and notified staff of the purposes, retention, legal bases etc. of what amounts to a de facto identification of union membership, a special category of data which places addition burdens on the Controller and Processor of that data.

If staff who may or may not have been on strike this month are asked by their employers to say whether or not they were available for work on that day, I would advise asking the DPC for guidance, or just making a complaint to them if you think the data collection was not performed properly.

Whole blueberries are visible in the compote, with rich purple juices trickling down the sides of the muffins. The front muffins are sharply focused, while those behind are softly blurred.

Getting the impression that a lot of early career research funding requires a temporary but full move to often a different country, thereby assuming a lack of settled life and/or family among the just-graduated. Humbug to that.

As an Irish person you generally expect the government not to care about children until it's apology time for some terrible crime against them they were complicit in, but, still, I am genuinely shocked that they're attacking a rape crisis centre over an advertisement about children and consent.

In England, no women aged 20 to 24 died of cervical cancer between 2020 and 2024, according to a study published in The Lancet. Researchers link it to the HPV vaccine.

The vaccine quietly wiping out a cancer

The HPV vaccine, which has been offered to schoolgirls in England since 2008, protects against the human papillomavirus that causes almost all cervical cancer... Among women in their early twenties in England, not one died of cervical cancer in the five years to 2024. It’s estimated that the vaccine has already saved 200 lives. NHS England started vaccinating boys in 2019 and expects to eliminate cervical cancer altogether by 2040. It’s a triumph.

This sticks out for me. I'd really like to see some polling on who, if anyone, is actually offended by this video, because "don't make kids hug you if they don't want to" is a completely anodyne message and it's been crazy to watch ministers trip over each other denouncing it.

I think what our Irish government fails to realise is that the ministers in their various areas are not the experts. They don't know better than everyone else. For instance Jim O'Callaghan does not know better on this topic than the DRCC, or One In Four, or any other victim advocacy group.

I wrote to my local TDs about the DRCC kerfuffle and got a response from one, the office of Deputy Joe Neville. Here's a screenshot, and I've put the text in the Alt box. I've yet to hear what "in many ways was counterproductive" actually means. What ways? How exactly was it counterproductive?
Screenshot of a response from the office of Deputy Joe Neville to a letter I wrote making a point about the inappropriateness of Jim O'Callaghan's comments and actions regarding the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre ad on Consent. The text is as follows:

Hi Stephen,

I hope that you are well.

Deputy Neville is fully aware of the important work that the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre including the 'We -Consent' programme they run aimed at informing, educating, and engaging all member of society about consent.

While it is vital to ensure that people understand the concept of consent when it comes to sexual relationships, this video did not advance that aim and in many ways was counterproductive.

We all agree that talking about consent is important if we want to stem the tide of sexual violence.

This video should not take away from the fact that that work is really important and is part of wide range of services and activities that Cuan, the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, funds on behalf of the Government. The overall We Consent programme is funded and supported by Cuan. But this is not a Government advertising campaign, and we are of the view that this isn't the best way to communicate this message.

Warm regards,
Síofra Nee
