The last couple of decades have demonstrated that the right were of course only pretending to oppose the Soviet Union authoritarian failings; what they hated was the prospect that communism could succeed at its egalitarian aims < thread >

It is actually interesting to see a real life early modern Mecantalist monarch, to see someone who actually just sincerely believes that worldview. Bit odd that he graduated from one of the most prestigious business schools in the world tbh.

the reason “AI will create so much abundance we will have a utopian society” rhetoric falls so flat is that the people building it will never, ever share their bounty unless it is taken from them and we all know it

I don't know how but we have to teach people to be better at detecting bullshit. Instead we have this ersatz skepticism where people are suspicious about the wrong things and find their way to conclusions that are worse than if they just blindly accepted conventional wisdom

My February 1968 Fortune magazine just arrived from an eBay seller (5 stars) and now I want to destroy the internet for what it took from us. It's gorgeous. I bought it for the article about industrial design that set Victor Papanek off. He references it in the intro to Design for the Real World.
