setting up students for final project specimen selection; Stolas imperialis remains popular as always but I'm hoping this year will see a return to the Psychedelic Jones Moth
nice, possibly oversaturated photo of a bold blue and greenish iridescent Neotropical tortoise beetle (Stolas imperialis). I'm sorry I don't have a source for this image, it was posted to reddit and I stolased it from thereThaumatographa jonesi, the psychedelic Jones moth-- photo from Moth Photographers Group, by Arlene Ripley. It's a tortricid in an astonishingly jazzy striped outfit in orange, black, silver, and iridescent purple.

A photo of the top of the head of a VERY fluffy white moth. The moth's 2 front legs are mostly covered in fluffy, white, hair-like scales. The moth's slender antennae are yellow and feathery, emerging from the fluffy head just above the dark eyes which one is visible on the left. The moth's head is covered in the same fluffy white scales as the front legs. The second pair of legs just visible on the lower sides of the frame are black and slender, with small bands of white just visible.

Three sets of glowing eyes reveal one larger mama ringtail getting read to hop over a rock, and two babies trailing behind.A ringtail hops toward the camera, front legs up in an active "bound." Another sniffs a rock behind it.In this 'butt shot,' a ringtail bounds from a rock, its tiny back feet kicked out, and its body in midflight. Its ringed tail resembles a swirling tornado.IN the foreground, the upper quarter of a ringtail's head -- ear showing and tail looped to the right - while another looks to the right int he background.

a regular favorite to the light - painted tiger moth (Arachnis picta) #dramamoth #teammoth #bugsky
I’m not sure how I can begin to describe this moth. grey, black and white, but densely patterned with stripes and spots. even its legs are fancy, with bands of colorsame moth on its back. The underside of the wings have lovely gold markings in addition to the grey and white. I moved the moth because I was worried about stepping on it.. and it decided to play dead. same moth, on a piece of tree bark. additional lighting is used, but no flash. soft golden highlights are visible in addition to the grey and white. scales on the wings are clearly visible.

The bee is of a larger size and predominantly black in colour with vibrant turquoise blue hairs covering it's thorax and head. It's darker translucent wings are spread out beside it and are iridescently glistening in blues, greens and purples.

Anyway, in more important news: moths. - Vestal, AKA raspberry ripple moth - Oak lantern - Furious grass veneer (elbow-striped grass veneer to be specific)
A beautiful and delicate moth on dry grass. It's very elegantly triangular, with pale wings that have a raspberry coloured stripe across them forming a v shape. A+ good moth pal, very magical.A glorious little micromoth with extremely long antennas, longer than it's wings. It's kinda shaped like a tiny body-board. Maybe it takes other small moths surfing. Anyway it's reddish purple with yellow patches, & is fluffy and delightful. 11 out of 10 good moth, would recommend. An absolutely livid-looking wedge-shaped micromoth. Maybe it also just read that crapulent sexist ableist article in the Torygraph. Anyhoo, its tiny long thin wings are silvery with a darker v-shaped stripe, and it has big round rage-filled eyes. Perfect furious friend, no notes.

🌊 Monograph of the British aphides ... London, Printed for the Ray Society, 1876-83. [Source]
Illustration titled "Monograph of the British aphides," Plate IX, showing four detailed, hand-colored drawings of two species of green aphids: Siphonophora menthae (two winged, two wingless) and Siphonophora chelidonii (two winged, two wingless). The winged aphids have translucent wings with subtle pink tinting and black veins, while the wingless ones display textured, segmented bodies with fine leg and antenna details. Each insect is numbered and positioned on a yellowed background typical of 19th-century scientific plates, emphasizing morphological differences important for entomological study. The illustration highlights anatomical accuracy characteristic of Victorian natural history.
