My first “intentional” leafminer-rearing (because leafminers were always accidental for me) gave two healthy moths! One escaped during the transfer so it was a big relief to find it again after frantic search 😂 On Ceanothus integerrimus, this is Tischeria sp. according to @ceiseman.bsky.social

combat aphids on garden plant by crushing them and wipe the mush back onto the plant. Aphids release a scent trail that parasitic wasps can pick up on and they’ll come make mummies of the rest of the aphids. Worked well on my penstemon. Wasp with mummy photo from a few years ago #aphids #gardentip

During our Valentine’s Day weekend trip, I spotted an acorn on blue oak with a gall wasp (presumably Andricus albobalani) chewing her way out. So I kept the acorn and she emerged from it in our hotel room. Most people probably don’t consider this as a romantic gift but I think it is 😂

While I was enjoying a stroll under some oak trees today, this gall wasp landed on my hand to say hi. It was nice to be able to capture her beauty, but boy, I hate macro shots of my skin! I should use more moisturizer 😂

After 3 weeks of California’s tule fog persisting where I live, I finally saw a brief blue sky today… and an adult wasp of Xanthoteras clavuloides (aka Club #Gall #Wasp) emerged from her gall! I guess I wasn’t the only one who’s been longing for some winter sunshine ☀️

Over this weekend, we got grocery bags full of wild mushrooms from the northern forests of CA. We think they will be awesome additions to our holiday meals but some of our family members are scared to eat them so it’ll be just more for us! 😜 #fungifriends

This gall looks like something you'd imagine a mythical fairy-like creature living in. It's shaped like a mushroom and has a small hole in the front. The stem of a plant has a couple round growths with small holes in them.

No, these are not berries. They are galls made by Dryocosmus castanopsidis on Chrysolepis chrysophylla. On today’s hike, it was so nice to see them in such abundance. Many of them are already dropping to the ground and getting ready to overwinter in the leaf litter.

Last week we took a road trip to Shasta/Trinity region in Northern California and got to see a lot of cool stuff. One of the highlights was a rare #oak called #Quercus sadleriana, and its rare #galls Neuroterus sadlerensis.

Once in a while, I get this all-golden, red-eyed Sycophila (a parasitoid of Cynipini) females from various oak galls 🤩 I hope someday, someone gives them a well-deserved beautiful scientific name (unless they have one already).
