Whichever Waymo spokesperson finally said the quiet part out loud about Waymo purposely illegally driving in bike lanes after years of getting away with it by deflecting and/or outright lying about doing it deserves thanks as they transition to a new role, position, and/or job.

why do transit agencies buy/install these? like just instal benches its probably cheaper. even if you hate homeless people(bad) you can still buy anti homeless benches (less bad than the lean benches)

Ugh nevermind, Papan's AB 1557 has now been amended to reduce the speed cap to 16 mph for both Class 1 (pedal assist, currently 20 mph speed cap) & Class 2 (throttle assist, currently 20 mph cap) e-bikes. Imagine if legislators cared this much about 4 mph speed differences for driver of 2 ton+ cars
"This bill would instead define a class 1 electric bicycle as a bicycle equipped with a motor that provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling, that is not capable of exclusively propelling the bicycle, and that ceases to provide assistance when the bicycle reaches the speed of 16 miles per hour. The bill would define a class 2 electric bicycle as a bicycle equipped with a motor that may be used exclusively to propel the bicycle, and that is not capable of providing assistance when the bicycle reaches the speed of 16 miles per hour. The bill would provide that, notwithstanding these definitions, an electric bicycle manufactured prior to January 1, 2027, that was equipped with a motor that is not capable of exceeding 750 watts of peak power and otherwise met the legal requirements for the relevant class at the time of manufacture shall retain its classification.
The bill would prohibit a manufacturer from equipping, and a retailer from offering for sale or advertising, any device labeled as an electric bicycle with a motor that is capable of exceeding 750 watts of peak power. The bill would also prohibit a manufacturer from equipping, and a retailer from offering for sale or advertising, any device labeled as a class 1 or class 2 electric bicycle with a motor that is capable of exceeding 250 watts of continuous power or that is capable of providing assistance to reach speeds greater than 16 miles per hour. The bill would make a violation of these provisions punishable by a civil penalty not to exceed $15,000 for a first violation and not to exceed $50,000 for each subsequent violation, upon an action brought by the Attorney General, a city attorney, a county counsel, or a district attorney. The bill would specify that a violation of this provision is not a criminal offense."

In other words, AVs will bring about major congestion that governments can’t fix. Happily, there is a solution: Road pricing Managed lanes (like I-66 in NoVA) and congestion pricing (as in NYC) can force AV companies & customers to consider the slowdowns they impose on everyone else.

Built a bench of out reclaimed eucalyptus wood milled by bayarearedwood.com - hard and heavy as hell (weighs more than an 8ft fir bench). Wet with no finish. Eucalyptus lumber gets a lot of hate - maybe undeserved? We will see how this bench ages
a 4ft dudersadt bench made of a pale wood with a unsually shimmery grain pattern (eucalyptus globus). In the background: a similar dark brown bench (stained redwood), a cone, and some tools

This year, in honor of Transit Equity Day and Rosa Parks, Transit Columbus and Strong Towns Columbus volunteers cleared bus stops and sidewalks around the city to provide dignity for riders. We built benches to increase accessibility and enable people to rest safely as they journey around Columbus.

To put this loan amount in perspective: California is spending $500 million to widen a 10-mile stretch of Highway 37 in the northern Bay Area (through a wetland, no less). But $750 million to save the *entire* Bay Area’s transit systems is apparently infeasible.

IDEA: on one-way streets, let's make the sidewalks one-way too! To walk in the other direction, you'd first travel one block perpendicularly, to the next street over. Or maybe that would be ridiculous and we shouldn't do bike lanes that way either? Hard to say
