After more than a decade of culling and the deaths of over 230,000 badgers, I welcome reports that the government has committed to ending the cull. I’ve written to the responsible minister asking her to confirm that badger culling in England will end in full.
Dear Angela,

I am really encouraged by reports that you made a verbal commitment to ending badger culls during a meeting with the Badgers Trust last week.

After more than a decade of culling, and the brutal deaths of more than 230,000 badgers, such a commitment would be very significant and hugely welcome. The commitment would reflect what many have provided compelling evidence against formany years: that badger culling is a costly, ineffective policy which has failed to address bovine tuberculosis in a meaningful way, yet persecutes one of the most iconic native species of rural England.

Ending intensive and supplementary licences marked the formal closure of the large-scale, long-term culling framework, but without a clear and unequivocal commitment, there remains a risk that badger killing could continue in some form under a future bovine tuberculosis strategy.
