Today’s star moth in VC20 is a Convolvulus Hawk-moth-a UK lifer for me!!! I knew persistence would eventually pay off growing huge quantities of Tobacco (Nicotiana) plants beside the moth trap & kept well watered! Otherwise a much quieter trap of late just 172 : 31 macro species #Teammoth

A photo of a Comma butterfly at rest. The distinctive white 'comma' can be seen. I've had to wait ages to get shot like this!A photo of a Gatekeeper butterfly, one of dozens around the area. They seem to have had a good year.A photo showing a Meadow Brown perched up. Similar to the Gatekeeper, but the former has only one white spot, whereas the Gatekeeper has two.A photo of a Painted Lady. I stopped counting when I'd reached double figures. I laughed thinking I’d probably see one around my pond. Stone me, I did! Another tick for the pond!

With numbers of Painted Ladies (distelvlinder, V cardui) rising on Dutch Butterfly Monitoring transects, it's a good moment to put this invasion in perspective. The graph shows a small influx, comparable with 1996 and 2003, and smaller than 2009 and 2019. But lets see how it continues.
