The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

#ThankYouRNLI
[letter in THE TIMES]

Sir, When the Dunbar lifeboat launched on December 21, 1971 in a force 10 gale to help a young man who had been face down in the water for several minutes, its crew did not know and did not ask whether the person was black, white, Christian, Muslim or a refugee. He was simply a human being in trouble. In setting out to save me the RNLI honoured one of the most admirable philosophies in human history. The fact that their action granted me a wonderful life I would otherwise not have had is a minor point. The important point is that in dedicating itself to the saving of human life the crew members of the RNLI restored my faith in humanity. Greater love hath no person than to risk their life for someone they do not know. Greater hate hath no person than to accuse those who put their lives on the line for others of being traitors.

Dr Martin Stephen

A crescent Moon seen during the day, arcing from upper left to lower right of the frame. At lower centre is the full disk of Jupiter; the small dots to its upper left and lower right and Io and Ganymede, respectively.

Extract from Private Eye: Bluesky also banned

THE government confirmed today that, despite being left off the initial list, Bluesky would be included in the social media sites banned for under 16s.

Said a Downing Street spokesman, "We're determined to protect impressionable teen minds from being exposed on Bluesky to friendly polite
conversation on topics ranging from the albums of Miles Davis to classic 70s Hollywood movies and the best era of Doctor Who."

He continued, "Filling teenagers' impressionable young minds with this genial chat is no way to prepare them for the hellish Al future that awaits them."

You see something similar if you look at bundled telecoms packages (e.g. broadband, TV and landline) or at ‘internet access provision’ (broadband). Prices jump each April, and the UK looks like an outlier. Quite striking!

This chart is bonkers. I think there's two possible explanations for why the UK runs so far ahead of other European countries – neither of them good. And the annual April price jump speaks to a wider issue. For more detail, see my column in this weekend's Observer. observer.co.uk/news/busines...

imagine you are Google circa 2002. users enter a search query and you return 10 relevant HTML links to specific, real web pages, with no commentary or any extra guff. you must literally only return a list of links. if you do anything apart from that you've got it wrong and need to try again. my query is: cool facts about whales

This evening’s surprise lovely find - this empty wooden sign, with a construction that, by mirroring paragraphs and pull quote sizes, give the impression of still having writing on it. A magazine page worth of text.
A wooden sign, that I’m sure once had a piece of paper saying ‘private’ stabled to it.

But rather than one piece of wood, it’s five slats of wood in different sizes, one atop the other.

Surrounded by cow parsley and fencing wire.
