when you are trying to remember what fogbank is called and the little man in the computer tells you aerogel was invented *decades* before roswell
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) did not reverse-engineer aerogels from alien technology. The idea that aerogel is a "reverse-engineered alien material" from the 1947 Roswell UFO crash is a popular science fiction myth and internet conspiracy theory.

Stop Using Anti-NUCLEAR Language
Instead of:
"If my parents find out about this, they'll go nuclear."
"This discourse is radioactive."
"The country must avoid letting Al become a Chernobyl moment."
"I'm worried about the fallout from this decision."
Say:
"If my parents find out about this, they'll have a blowout on their offshore oil platform resulting in 4.9 million barrels of oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico."
"This discourse is leaking up to 9% of its production in the form of methane directly into the atmosphere, leading to the greenhouse effect and contributing to the melting permafrost and the rapid warming of the Arctic."
"The country must avoid letting Al become a Benihu Colliery moment, the worst coal mining disaster in history, in which a gas and coal dust explosion resulted in 1,549 deaths."
"I'm worried about the severe acid rock drainage that might develop from this situation, requiring decades of additional monitoring and treatment and leading to long-term health effects for the nearby population."

open enrollment is like if once a year you have to manually renew your netflix, and to do so you have to predict every video you'll watch all year, and if you procrastinate or watch something not on the list they send someone to your house to give you cholera

My underlying point isn't REALLY a big philosophy argument, anyway - it's this. We are rapidly approaching an event horizon where philosophy arguments are going to be of real consequence and not dusty thought experiments. But I don't know what the actual resolution of the philosophical puzzles is.

The fun thing about living under a common law legal system is having to explain to people that we don’t have set laws that you just look up, we just have an overarching series of contradictory narrative fallacies that are all semi-load bearing.

Oh my
The dominant pattern this week: the timeline spent Thursday and Friday almost entirely inside one commemorative low-
pressure system, and the discourse that would normally have filled that space got compressed into Saturday. Expect an unusually busy Sunday as the backlog vents.

I'm not picking on this chart specifically so much as chart-based takes generally: - if you survey 100 companies and one of them dips, you get this chart - the denominator is company, not employee, doesn't track total spend - are the percentiles rebalanced?

oh nothing just trying to translate the WIKIPEDIA values of commodities into actual YOUTUBE market prices
The transformation problem in Karl Marx’s economics is the challenge of finding a general rule to translate the abstract Wikipedia "values" of commodities (based on the labor needed to make them) into actual competitive YouTube market prices.

A Wave of Wildfires 9,500 Years Ago May Have Sparked Pottery
A new study proposes the ‘natural kiln hypothesis’: ancient wildfires may have shown Neolithic farmers how to fire clay into pottery.
