I simply do not understand what's going on in Labour that renders its leaders incapable of finding a TV camera and speaking out against street violence. Even if you assume they agree about immigration, violence is wrong, unpopular AND against the interests of any even vaguely left wing govt.

Went to watch the De Gaulle film, only for the viewing to be cancelled due to the film being corrupted at the cinema. Just like perfidious Albion to suppress the General's élan

Books of 2026 - 16 A Certain Idea of France - Julian Jackson A ~800 page odyssey through the life of General de Gaulle. Fascinating man, unflinching in his vision of France as a great nation, and unafraid to scheme and play brinkmanship to get his own way.

Hahaha fucking helllllllll just read this. So many thoughts. Like “this is how you actually do money laundering, not on Oxford Street” and “British deference to small businesses being honest and taxpaying is the problem”. (Writes a small business owner.) www.theguardian.com/news/ng-inte...

The other Post Office scandal: how organised crime launders money on the high street
The long read: Hundreds of millions of pounds of dirty money are being deposited at post offices every year. So why are the police reluctant to investigate the scale of the problem?

Complaining about nightlife when you *checks notes* choose to live in Soho is like living in South Kensington and complaining about the museums. Or moving to Hackney and grumbling about creatives. Living in Richmond and hating green space. It's all getting a bit silly, isn't it?

there were already many reasons to do this but Elon Musk actively encouraging racist violence in Belfast should be the final straw for every UK government institution to stop doing business - including being on X - with him in any way, and for him to be barred from entry to the country.

this is unworkably insane as well as morally repellent, and still isn't going to win the government any points at all from the people who are now going to tour the country waging lawfare against any organisations that look like they might be treating trans people with dignity

It's a finely balanced decision. On the one hand, you have the architect of a strategy that is not working, who could not do this job in opposition *the first time*, and buy the PM breathing space. On the other, moving it would involve admitting that some of the PM's old legal buddies were right.

Books of 2025 - 29 The Pianist - Wladyslaw Szpilman The incredible story of Wladyslaw Szpilman's survival during the Nazi occupation. The prose is all the more powerful for the detached manner in which the horrors of the ghetto, the "human hunts", and the desperation are told. Profoundly moving.
