No idea what the impact will actually be but I suspect we're about to see an example in polling of when a low salience topic becomes a high salience one.

Imagine being able to tell the Andy Burnham in Gordon Brown's cabinet "don't worry if you can't block it now, in 18 years you'll be prime minister and the thing still won't have fucking happened"

Yet another begging bowl email from the Labour Party this morning. ‘There is no pretending about the scale of what we’re up against.’ If only you guys had a massive majority in Parliament and could pass legislation to protect our democracy from ‘what we’re up against’.

Helpful reminder that the vast majority of middle England home-owning "Con15/15/19" voters who think immigration is too high will also see these guys as thugs and their anger at the state response will likely be at how slow and ineffective it is.

After the GE2015 polling miss, the inquiry led by Bluesky's favourite survey methodologist @patricksturg.bsky.social, found f2f surveys conducted by @britishelectionstudy.com and British Social Attitudes had got a lot closer to the result than the polling industry. That was not the case in GE2024.

As someone who writes surveys for a living: *this is what you pay us for rather than doing it yourself*. Is this something people can/will answer accurately? How does it compare to what we know about how they behave?

Easy to criticise question design after the fact but my one tweak would've been adding "yes, I had a quick glance but tried to be careful", "yes, I wore several pairs of normal sunglasses" and "yes, I stared deep into the soul of the sun"

Inspired by @stephenkb.bsky.social's mention of Ned Beauman, Venomous Lumpsucker is a wonderful book but my favourite line is:
It was just one blow, but Halyard took it with all the fortitude and dignity of somebody trying to pull off a personal injury scam.

Given a) how hard constituency polling is b) how unusual this one was and impossible to predict turnout, this from @survation.bsky.social has held up pretty well. The only consistent lesson in polling: never prompt for Laurence Fox
Survation poll of Clacton, Farage on 70%, Binface on 20%, Fox on 2%

Also my spicy hot take on the film: it's fine, it's what I'd expect if you said "Christopher Nolan is making an Odyssey film", gently cinematic, a few clever bits, a bit that reaches too far, and no emotional attachment whatsoever to any of the characters
