We built a society where it's necessary and if we don't consider this other side of things nothing is going to change
001
Melissa @melissabreen.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
And AI will go a long way. Banning social media won't stop this behaviour, it'll just change form. I'm not saying social media is completely innocent or healthy, but we haven't given kids much of a choice.

Melissa @melissabreen.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
We used to spend our time at the cinema or bowling or the arcade. But they're all either shut down or unaffordable. Removing the medium won't remove the problem. Funding into local communities and after school activities, plus education in critical thinking and how to spot manipulation, brainwashing

Around town all the time and they can't even do that anymore because they're arrested for loitering. There's nothing for them to do so they're stuck inside on their phones. That's why they spend so much time on the internet, there's nothing else to do.

Melissa @melissabreen.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
Community groups for kids are underfunded and are shutting down because all the spaces are being turned into hotels. There's also no one available to volunteer at them either because no one has free time because they need two jobs just to feed their families. Teenagers used to hang out outside

Melissa @melissabreen.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
Removing social media isn't going to stop the problem when the problem is systemic and existed long before social media. Kids need to be educated in critical thinking skills, but most importantly we need to give them something else to do. They're bored.

Melissa @melissabreen.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
Rumours and insults were face to face. Yes, they can be anonymous now but physical violence in schools have massively reduced over the last decade. Similar with kids stealing cars and driving recklessly. That has always happened, they used to drag race and play chicken in fields.

Melissa @melissabreen.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
I think blaming teenagers recent bullying and dangerous behaviour only on social media is a mistake. Teenagers have always been like this, the medium has just changed and it's not done in secret anymore. Before social media, kids got beat each other up in the bathrooms, locker rooms, the school yard

In March, she filed a case with the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) for alleged unlawful termination of tenancy, which she says is the reason why she is homeless.

But there is a broader point, about the relative lack of urgency in getting any legislation through the Oireachtas in the modern era. Only 21 bills completed their passage through the Dáil and Seanad last year – the joint-lowest total in the history of the State. The only year with fewer bills passed was 1922, where the Irish Free State only existed for three weeks before Christmas and still managed to get five Acts passed.
