if you think the dems should intend shutdown as their end goal, then you are responsible for saying that, in plain language, and people who depend on federal paychecks will be well within their rights to loathe you for it. if not, then you need to articulate what else you think they can get.

The “losing control” narrative creates the loss of control. Nobody is losing control of an emerging intelligence. They’re redirecting their own agency to it, as a way of diffusing responsibility, but the self-perpetuated intelligence myth has them convinced they have no choice.

When I was younger, I heard people frequently refer to having been "Gypped" or "Jewed" when they felt financially taken advantage of. That it was slang didn't change the fact that it was based on antisemitism or antiromanyism.

I think this framing is far too credulous to this student, and where it is they would be getting vocabulary such as this.
"Last week I interviewed a teenager about his use of the word “goyslop.” That’s a term for cruddy, low-quality food — as coined, or at least popularized, by far-right antisemites. This teenager was absolutely not a far-right antisemite; he just happened to attend a New Jersey high school where students, Jewish and Christian and otherwise, said “goyslop” all the time. “If your friend goes and gets McDonald’s, and gets two burgers and a shake,” he explained, “like, ‘Oh, my god, that’s so goyslop, that’s goy.’”"

The implication of this "New York Times" headline is that "goy" is simply a slang term used by Generation Z now, no longer attached to antisemitic implications. I think this is not only wrong, but rather dangerous for the newspaper to be printing.

There’s been a lot of talk of getting off Google in recent years, but now it’s time for people to get serious. This company believes it has people locked in. People need to show Google there are consequences for its actions. disconnect.blog/google-is-it...
And that’s exactly what Google users should do. There’s no denying that some Google services are more difficult to replace than others — trust me, I’ve been working on it — but for most of them, it’s easier than you might expect. Sure, it will take some adjusting and there will be some moving pains, but unless you want to be forced into the Gemini lifestyle, it’s time to make a plan to get off Google and start packing your virtual boxes for greener pastures.

As I mentioned, I’ve been at this for a while — I wrote a whole guide to help people get off US tech. I replaced Gmail with Proton Mail, started using Qwant to replace Search, dropped Chrome for Vivaldi, experimented with Here WeGo to replace Maps, and replaced a bunch more services with alternatives in the Proton suite: Drive, Calendar, Pass, Authenticator, and most recently Meet. In short, deGoogling is possible if you’re willing to put in the work and accept some compromises. I’m not all the way there, but I’ve made a good dent.
