Come on down to the Council House for International Day of Birmingham, see the Re-Union Jack ♥️ #OneBrum Goldship have repurposed dozens of dirty & torn polyester flags removed from Birmingham's lamp posts to create a huge Union Jack, adorned with the names of people who have called Birmingham home
Photo of artwork description
GOLDSHIP Re-Union Jack 2026

Repurposed polyester flags/Mixed media.

Re-Union Jack is an ongoing community art project conceived by GoldShip, the creative duo of textile sculptor Clare Elisabeth and event producer Sam Shipman.

Repurposing dozens of dirty and torn polyester flags removed from Birmingham's lamp posts, Clare and Sam, alongside countless contributors from the wider community, pieced them together to create a huge Union Jack.

The flag was then transformed over several months by countless more contributors into a visual celebration of the people and stories that have helped shape the West Midlands. Across its surface are the names of influential Midlanders, spanning from the Anglo-Saxon Beorma, after whom Birmingham takes its name, through to the present day. Each has a connection to migration, immigration or the positive influence of people who have made the West Midlands their home.

Together, these names reflect the region's extraordinary history as a vibrant melting pot of cultures, ideas, talent and communities - and the positive contribution that migration has made to its identity.

The flag has since been signed in black by many of the people whose names feature upon it as a collective endorsement of its message of unity, inclusion and community.Photo of huge Union (Jack) Flag on lighting truss in the hall of the Council House.
It's glorious and bears many names upon it of the people of Birmingham
Each has a connection to migration, immigration or the positive influence of people who have made the West Midlands their home.

I want the Prime Minister to look into a TV camera and say the RNLI are heroes, that we do not change policy by street violence in this country, and that he expects any criminal action to face the full force of the law. That's it. That's all he has to do.

80 year-olds with pro-Palestine signs: arrested as terrorists. Greens planning to block a road, to highlight an existential crisis: sent down for years. Masked far-right thugs blocking roads and ports, using intimidation, obstruction & threatening behaviour: no arrests. The real two-tier policing.

Finding it really telling right now we CAN arrest people holding signs peacefully about their political views. But we CAN'T arrest men beating women with literal sticks at Reform UK for expressing their views. So freedom of speech includes violence now for certain groups?

As a very basic thing, we as citizens should not accept the presence of a private army of masked racist thugs on the streets of our towns... intimidating others and threatening to overthrow the state... There are some fairly obvious precedents for this stuff.

Totally agree. Urgent action needed - proscription for a peaceful protestors but no action for masked thugs on the streets, closing a port & acts of intimidation, all organised by the far right with links to violence. Get a grip on this and the other threats to our democracy. (Campaign finance )

With all respect to the BBC, the reason this story "matters" is not about whether it distracts from Reform's conference. It "matters" because it is important our leaders are not conspiring to break the law.

Such an important thread. As @olufemiotaiwo.bsky.social says at the end, the media adopting this approach are mainstream (and previously respectable) sources. It is everywhere. This explains so much about how lies are repeated and become established as fact.

Actually, one more - I feel like I should say this directly, so here goes.
In the 90s and 00s, the groups I remember pursuing this strategy (hyperpublicize mugshots, Black crime statistics, etc) were Stormfront, the Klan, etc. Now it's the New York Times and the Telegraph. That is the story here.

There’s a lot to learn about Burnham yet. But I hope he can at least communicate. If he can formulate arguments for actions he takes, then we’ll understand what he stands for. He can’t flip/flop the amount of times Starmer did- yes it’s good to listen but have conviction before you take action.

Condemning riots isn't enough. We need policy action, including an immediate appraisal of X as a vehicle for coordinating far-right disorder. And we need political leadership, to challenge white nationalism as an idea, not to validate it daily and then complain when it turns violent.

Mamdani has demonstrated something that Democrats have largely forgotten. You can't just do good things for voters and expect to be rewarded for it. You have to tell them about it, over and over again. You have to advertise your work in office just as much as you did on the campaign to win it.

Not only is Reform’s new policy of putting migrant detention centres in any constituency that votes Green a piece of disgusting imported Trumpism, the centres meet the definition of concentration camps.
order to deport all illegal migrants, Reform will detain tens of thousands at a time. Migrants will be held in secure centres for a couple of weeks before deportation.
So here's our promise:
A Reform government will not put any migrant detention facilities in constituencies with a Reform MP or where
Reform controls the council.
Of the remaining areas, we will prioritise Green-controlled parliamentary seats and Green-controlled councils for the detention centres.
Put simply: Vote Reform, no detention centre near you.
Vote Green... good chance you'll get one.

‘Payment expected within seven days’: New Zealand doctor invoices US embassy for rising petrol costs
Shane Dunphy sends bill for almost $3,000, along with letter saying ‘The USA is responsible for this and therefore should be held accountable’ A New Zealand doctor has asked the US embassy in Wellington to reimburse his clinic for petrol costs, saying Donald Trump and his administration started an “avoidable war” and should foot the bill for rising fuel prices. Dr Shane Dunphy, of Onslow medical centre in New Zealand’s capital, requested the US embassy pay his centre NZ$2,790.95 (US$1,597) for the cost of petrol vouchers provided to staff to help pay for transport.
