Earth, from Artemis II. Everything you've ever done, everyone you've ever known, all that you have traveled is contained in this picture.
A photograph of Earth seen from space against a black background with faint stars. The visible hemisphere prominently displays the blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean, the large brown landmass of northwestern Africa, and swirling white cloud formations scattered across the globe. A thin, bright blue atmospheric glow traces the top left curve of the planet.

Just a reminder that 1yr ago today many dedicated NIH employees received RIF notices and started the process where many others were told they must leave their positions/ICs after years of service. The pain felt across the scientific community in the last year is also felt by those serving it.

Watch this clip. Professors will recognize this kid as the student who didn't do the reading but still has very strong opinions about how it's all "bullshit," except this time he's not the callow student who's going to fail your course, he's the reviewer who's going to cancel your grant.

I am sure that this is right. The NIH doesn’t discover many new drugs themselves (that’s not what they’re set up to do), but the fundamental research they fund is *absolutely crucial* to biomedical progress. Watching Trump and Musk destroy it all is driving me to despair.

ICYMI, NIH will be asking soon for each NIH-funded researcher to justify every draw they make (often several times a week) on their grants and every NIH officer and their boss will have to justify their agreeing on these draws. This is the death of US biomedical research by a thousand cuts
