Since it's spooky season I'm going to be recommending spooky stories as often as I can! First up, THE SHADOW OVER PSYCHE STATION by Yuval Kordov! A recent release in Canadian fiction this plays with some well known Lovecraft tropes in a unique setting! matthewstienberg.wordpress.com/2026/07/21/t...

Resident Evil (2026) is not your typical Resident Evil story! And honestly as a reboot for the franchise it's stronger for that! I have thoughts!

You could easily make a personal conspiracy out of this that there is in fact a serial killer but the multinational authorities are too embarrassed to admit it, thus find a more publicly palatable proposal that saves face. Definitely a dark story in there somewhere!

It needs to be said often and loud that the often self serving memoirs of people - especially in politics - should be treated as at best unreliable narrators. At worst completely dishonest. Basic source criticism takes into account the question of "who wrote this and why?"

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

I don't think it's controversial to speculate that the recent flood of concerns about the "existential risk" of AI by tech companies has more to do with the threshold of legal consequences to said companies for their actions versus risk to humanity as a whole. www.bbc.com/news/article...

We have such a skewed sense of what is and isn't contemporary in period history because of the very real (and necessary) urge by historians to categorize and wall off eras of history for ease of study. But I assure you that history doesn't stop on a dime!

My patience for people who want to LARP as Templar Knights and go "Deus Veult" while swinging swords wears thin as it seems most of them would also be revolted by the idea of shepherding the poor and being good Samaritans. Embrace the moniker of "poor brothers" to the needy.

A particular bugbear of mine in recent reading is when people assume that cavalry was a spent force in combat well before it stopped having utility on the battlefield. A prime example is the Charge of the Heavy Brigade at Balaclava in 1854! It is then forgotten ⏬
