Finished a reread of THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING and it is an underrated choice for the spooky season! From the Black Riders, Barrow Wights and then the whole of the trek through Moria whether it's the Watcher or the Balrog, this is a book filled with terrifying encounters from monsters to ghosts!

I would be EXTREMELY annoyed to discover my PR is "AI"-generated, and as someone bombarded with dozens of "AI"-generated emails daily, I assure you the stink of "AI" is immediately noticable and immediately dismissible. Publishers are not doing their new books any favors in using it.

If you praise the Confederacy, everyone knows what you're doing. If you praise Rhodesia, though, you still get that little frisson of naughtiness, the little tingle of rebelliousness that can power you through the drudgery of your eight-hour shift at your dad's car dealership.

Watching the first episode of the new Carrie series and its a new take on the idea. Interesting early premise, but I'm not sure it needs to be stretched into an eight episode miniseries.

Book Publishers Are Quietly Using More AI. Staff Are Revolting
Workers at three major publishing houses tell WIRED that LLMs are being used for publicity, cover art, back cover copy, and emails, as some execs push junior staff to champion the tech.

🧵, but also I REALLY want to emphasize "the book is written the way it is for a reason." I sometimes see things like "I don't know if X was on purpose" and yes, yes it was. Unless it's an actual typo or some formatting accident it's on purpose. The author did that on purpose.

One of the reasons I'm happy I picked up stoic philosophy in my mid 20s is that it helped me assess my needs and wants in a way that was achievable. When I stopped worrying so much about what I couldn't control and focused on what I could, life became immeasurably better!

Indeed. My chronic problem with how self defense laws get applied in Canada is it often seems to be at the whim of Crown prosecutors whether a self defense claim is legitimate or not no matter the circumstances. And those are often subject to prosecutors desires for convictions.

The way to tell if you’ve met this kind of guy is to ask what is the first rule of firearms and if he doesn’t immediately tell you to treat every gun as if it’s loaded and that they’re dangerous tools then he’s the guy Sky is describing.

There were things I thought i would have done by the time I was 30 that never ended up happening. The ones that did were surprising, but in a good way. My 20 year old self would be genuinely surprised where I ended up and probably happy for it.

Would be deeply funny if the next administration used eminent domain to seize the whole property for "security" reasons and effectively kicked the Trump family out. A real "thanks for the property" moment.

I enjoy researching war, plagues, imperialism and politics. That does not in fact mean I think those things are good or fun. They have however been integral to the human experience which means I think it's good to be familiar with them.

Technically we can absorb them as territories (that just requires an act of Parliament) but to create a whole new province would require a constitutional amendment, which is not impossible but as experience shows, insanely difficult to get in practice. Though without a test this one is hard to say.

Occasionally the Crown (abstract) is in fact a positive feature of a system where the Crown (person) can be a net negative. Sometimes those dense layers of tradition can do something right.

Successful Harry Potter fanfic appears to produce two outcomes: 1) a good career as a fantasy author 2) an obsession with the singularity and desire to build AI God via the formation of a Bay area sex cult. There is no middle ground.

I have a sincere fear of a coming "digital dark age" where a simply staggering amount of information from the 21st century is lost because digital storage is not actually that great compared to physical storage. We know paper lasts centuries! Digital is iffy at even 5+ years!

A nonfiction book written in, let’s say, the year 1795, is most likely still around in a library somewhere and every other work it referred to is probably accessible in some archive as well. A nonfiction book written in 2007 probably cites a bunch of urls that are dead or rotted beyond recognition.

This is really good, unsurprisingly. I will only add that "state vs. state" warfare being the norm is itself only really true in Europe for a few centuries; for most of history states spent more time fighting non-state actors and policing unstable frontiers in perpetual low-level conflicts.
