ok gonna get Sincere(TM) here for a second There's a lot of doomerism about how "We're all cooked" because "The GOP is trying to steal our votes." So here's the true story of how the GOP tried to steal our votes here in NC and FAILED. TWICE. Ballot fraud isn't final. It gets stopped all the time.

Major kudos to MIT, who just put out a report about AI on their campus that lucidly explains the threat posed by AI to cognition and the student experience, while at the same time prioritizes learning, students, and the value of education. 1/x aiandeducation.mit.edu/report/

Trump made vastly more money in crypto last year than all of the presidential salaries since the beginning of the republic combined. He made more from crypto than the salaries of every member of Congress over the past 15 years *combined*. It’s yielded a collective shrug from his fellow Republicans.

Any public comment on a proposed regulation, event short and anonymous saying you don't like it/like it, helps. For those wanting to provide something deeper, I saw this resource and really liked it, from the PDF linked on here: www.peer-center.org/research/vir...
•
Literature: Submit existing research that relates to the policy under consideration that is not currently cited (including your own!)
•
Respond to the characterization of research cited by policymakers, including and especially if it’s a characterization of your research
•
Be clear about why (or why not) the evidence base on which the rules rely is appropriate
•
Measurement: Provide feedback on methodological approaches used and/or suggest alternative approaches to measuring policy impact
•
Suggestions of "better" ways of doing things, including why,are especially helpful
•
Consider feasibility to the extent you can
•
Data: Provide feedback on the data the agency relied upon and/or suggest alternative data sources that could be used
•
Be specific. Whyis the alternative data more appropriate? What are the pros and cons?
•
Again, consider feasibility if you can. What is the best data available now and what could be even better with a reasonable amount of investment?
Which Kinds of Comments Make an Impact?Comments from researchers are especially important on the Regulatory Impact Analysis. Key questions to ask:
-
Is anything left out? (Even if hard to value, the agency should still identify all effects)
-
Are there any unintended consequences of this policy?
-
Is there causal research that could help generate better estimates? Especially in a way that may alter the cost-benefit calculation
•
Respond to questions posed within the proposed rule
-
These questions show where the evidence is especially thin, or the policy is particularly open to change
•
Comments supporting something the regulator is doing (particularly with validating research) are useful and important, too, if you agree with their approach•
Agency is (probably) going to try to do something. So tryto not just criticize – also suggest alternative approaches
•
No need to comment on all aspects of a regulation. Stick to your area(s) of expertise
•
Comments can be short! 1-2 pages is fine. Focusing on just oneissue is fine.
•
Any research can be valuable, whether or not it is published
-
But use credible evidence
-
Peer-reviewed articles need not be in top journals
-
Working papers are also valuable!
•
Be sure to provide a summary of your credentials and expertise when commenting
•
Write with coauthors or invite co-signatories after drafting. The more the merrier!

-Farm bankruptcies are indeed on the rise...from historic lows, back to still-slightly-lower-than-normal levels. -The US used to grow a lot of crops for export. We can't sell them anymore. We SHOULD cut back on crop acreage. To keep growing the same amount we used to would be absolutely insane.

Let me get this straight: Bari Weiss has radically edited the new Trump interview on 60 Minutes? Let's not forget that Weiss lost her mind over standard editing of a Kamala Harris interview in 2024. But as Juliet shows, this Trump editing goes way beyond standard broadcast practices. Good grief.
I went through both and made a transcript of exactly what was included and what was cut from the shorter version that aired on network television. The final 13-minute edit that CBS broadcast on Sunday was a bit of a Frankenstein monster as the president was sometimes cut off mid-sentence while other sections were cut and moved around to give the conversation a better flow.

Throughout the longer un-edited interview the president gave disorganized rambling answers that were filled with false statements about foreign investment in the U.S., immigration, and the 2020 election. He also brought up transgender athletes more than once and trashed the Democratic Party and the members of the press.
