Today on the Engaged Learning Collective, I have a column about thinking expansively about kindness and communication in higher education. And if you're not familiar with the incredible stuff at ELC, take a look around! engagedlearningcollective.substack.com/p/expanding-...

Expanding the Reach of Kindness
Distrust is pervasive in higher ed, and it partners with competition to make too many of us miserable.

I keep thinking about that extraordinary film *Women Talking* and what one of the women says to the only man they trust: "You have to stay and teach the boys." This thread explains exactly what we need to teach. Men bear the responsibility for modeling these lessons in our own lives too.

On October 13 at 1pm ET, @liznorell.bsky.social, @thetattooedprof.bsky.social, @josheyler.bsky.social, and I are convening a webinar about why we believe in AI resistance in higher ed. Registration link in the first comment!
"The AI boom is being sold as inevitable progress, but the real question is not whether artificial intelligence can do useful things in theory. It is who owns it, who profits from it, what it is mostly being used for, and who pays the environmental and political bill when the hype turns into microchip manufacturing plants, data centres, rising power demand, water stress, surveillance and attacks on democratic life." I think higher ed coverage/discourse is disproportionately driven by voices from elite institutions (Ivy League, etc.) and that is not a good thing. But I also think K-12 coverage/discourse is disproportionately driven by voices from independent/private schools and that is also not a good thing.

The best recent example in the American context is “No Child Left Behind”, a nominally idealistic program that manifested as an obsession with nonstop testing that, you’ve guessed it, caused rapidly increasing numbers of children to be “left behind”

We live in the wake of that era and the subsequent eras that have fixated so entirely on test numbers and systems that teachers frequently need to squeeze the actual learning in-between a torturous calendar of overlapping testing regimes from the different governing bodies that dictate curriculum.

Refusing to use AI isn’t a recalcitrant position. It’s the moral one. There is too much wrong with how this is happening to just “if you can’t beat em join em” this. It’s a lack of consent machine. An environmental destruction machine. An emotional and cognitive numbing machine.

An utterly reasonable take by MIT’s committee on AI and education. The argument about resisting temptation to replace RAs with AI was thoughtful: RAs are an investment in scientific community. I also liked the call to think about spaces and tools for offline learning and evaluation.

MIT AI Report Calls for Alternative Grading, Social Learning
Artificial intelligence is upending the MIT education, a committee has found. Students, instructors and administrators will need to revisit nearly every part of that experience to respond to it.

it's incredible that AI has more quickly put a microscope to numbers-focused education than, I dunno, years of proof showing it's horrid for actual learning and work potential. it's never too late to rework the system and save future generations from both AI and outdated educational standards!

This is one of the broad research reviews/recommendation white papers I've been waiting for! I understand that the grading issue needs to be addressed immediately and that it's part of the problem. But I want to see an evolving research summary of the cognitive damage (and psych damage) of AI.
