When you see the story about how the world now has its first trillionaire, and when you see the story about how laboratories in Congo have run out of supplies to test for Ebola, it is important to understand that in many ways these are the same story.

In the end it seems to me that one of the main distinctions between people who see LLMs as good and those who don't is whether they see the digital part of the world as "content" or "people". If it's all just content, LLMs make sense. If it's where people live LLMs become a somewhat dumb idea.

Much of the "is AI art?" questions are really "is AI communication?" but in disguise. AI can make art because a urinal factory can make art. If AI makes art, it's through designation, not intent. AI is a one-sided simulation of communication processed exclusively by the viewer. There's no exchange.

read this and had a full epiphany that ai has simply trained all these idiots to give it easy prompts.
I was trying to win over a friend who was skeptical of AI image generation and every prompt they asked me to try wasn't really feasible one shot: (1) an empty frame with MySpace/Y2K aesthetics (functional negative space is hard) in; (2) a step by step guide on how to cook pasta (requires sequential content); (3) Persian calligraphy saying Pizza (words are hard enough, let alone stylised).

Cursed requests, but kind of shows how a non-techie would approach this stuff when models aren't really optimised for this out of the box. Many techies aren't particularly good at prompting, but they still have a much better feel for what works/doesn't than your average consumer. I think these intuitions will come with time, but also better products will be built making these edge cases more and more rare.Related: I rarely run into hallucinations with LLMs these days, but that’s partly because I’ve implicitly learned what (not) to ask them. It’s just part of the skillset, like knowing that web search won’t help with “where did I put my glasses?” or “why is my aunt mad at me.”

This is what's so baffling about so many suggestions for AI in the humanities classroom: they mistake the product for the point. Writing outlines and essays is important not because you need to make outlines and essays but because that's how you learn to think with/through complex ideas.

It occurs to me how similar the current state of genAI in tech products is to the plastics producing industry in the 1980s - where they openly dreamed about waste bins overflowing with single-use plastics - and importantly, *actually made that into a reality* discardstudies.com/wp-content/u...
Back in 1956 when I spoke to an SPI conference in New York I pursued a theme which brought some rather startling. reactions. I was quoted, in one sentence, in a newsletter, as saying that "the future of plastics is in the trash can." I had to do a little explaining to my boss, who happens also to be the publisher of Modern Plastics magazine. What I had said in the talk was that it was time for the plastics industry to stop thinking about "reuse" packages and concentrate on single use. For the package that is used once and thrown away, like a tin can or a paper carton, represents not a one-shot market for a few thousand units, but an everyday recurring market measured by the billions of units. Your future in packaging, I said, does indeed lie in the trash can. It is measure of your progress in packaging in the last. seven years that this remark will no longer raise any eye- brows. You are filling the trash cans, the rubbish dumps and the incinerators with literally billions of plastics bottles, plastics jugs, plastics tubes, blisters and skin packs, plastics bags and films and sheet packages and now, even plastics cans. The happy day has arrived when nobody any longer con- siders the plasticss package too good to throw away. How did you get here? By steadily lowering materials. prices while steadily improving materials and methods so that plastics can at last take their place in packaging as a utilitarian material--in many cases now the best material for a given job at the lowest cost. You can now in some cases beat out such standbys as glass, metal and yes, even paper-on a strictly dollars-and-cents basis. And with plastics prices still moving downward, while the other materials are pushing steadily upward--the future can
