Sign of the times... In yesterday's lecture I accidentally referred to President Trump as "President Tariff". Ironically, he probably wouldn't mind this title, right?

Forthcoming in the AER: "The Economic Impacts of Sexual Assault" by Abi Adams, Kristiina Huttunen, Emily Nix, and Ning Zhang.
aeaweb.org
The Economic Impacts of Sexual Assault
(Forthcoming Article) - We estimate the economic impacts of sexual assault using population-wide Finnish police reports and hospital admissions. Over the five years following a sexual assault, victims’ employment falls by 6 percentage points and annual earnings decline by ¤1,500, alongside a 6 percentage point increase in anti-depressant use, relative to otherwise observationally equivalent women. These effects persist for at least a decade and correspond to a 15% decline in employment, 17% earnings loss, and 28% rise in anti-depressant use relative to pre-assault baselines. Sexual assault also generates spillover effects to victims’ networks: female schoolmates and victims’ parents experience significant mental health deterioration.

So many tech people seem to see the conflict between parenting and work as one in which work is the natural and moral victor. If you’re going to automate an aspect of your life, why wouldn’t it be the meetings rather than the spending quality time with your teenager?!

When utilized in literature review, LLMs consistently 1. fail to mention female authors in female-led literatures, 2. insist that men are more influential or more heavily cited when this is contradicted by objective citation counts, and 3. attribute women’s work to hallucinated male scholars.

If there’s a water shortage, don’t subsidize showers. If there’s a blackout, don’t make AC cheaper. If there’s an oil shortage, don’t cut gas taxes. Prices are helping signal scarcity. A gas tax holiday weakens that signal right when it matters most.

"They don't like the EU": Europe's top diplomat says Washington wants to divide Europe - Euromaidan Press
Kaja Kallas told the Financial Times that the United States "does not like the European Union" and has been "very clear" it wants to divide Europe — a charge she levelled as Washington launched new trade probes against the bloc this week.

New tariff just dropped. Americans set to pay an additional 10% tax on all goods from Germany, the UK, France, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland. It starts in two weeks, rising to 25% by June. (Aside: A trade war with one EU country is a trade war with the entire EU).

Good 🧵⬇️ but I question "more radical". They are different; work differently. 1. Customs union = goods only. EU single market = goods, services (a UK strength), capital and people. 2. Customs union = a common set of tariffs, less flexibility, as ⬇️ There are other options for closer trade relations

Reading about divided EU member state opinions on Trump's tariffs, I still think the essential problem is they think he wants a deal, whereas all evidence suggests he really wants tariffs. Only countries to have done deals just get a small reduction. Given this, what is the EU aim?

11/ If I were a betting man, I would guess that either the Trump administration never actually levies these 50 per cent tariffs and a deal emerges - or Trump does, Europe retaliates, and a while later a China-style rollback is negotiated where Trump gets none of what he wants. That's my guess. 🤷‍♂️

🚨Trump says he wants a 50% tariff on the EU starting in 9 days
The European Union, which was formed for the primary purpose of taking advantage of the United States on TRADE, has been very difficult to deal with. Their powerful Trade Barriers, Vat Taxes, ridiculous Corporate Penalties, Non-Monetary Trade Barriers, Monetary Manipulations, unfair and unjustified lawsuits against Americans Companies, and more, have led to a Trade Deficit with the U.S. of more than $250,000,000 a year, a number which is totally unacceptable. Our discussions with them are going nowhere! Therefore, I am recommending a straight 50% Tariff on the European Union, starting on June 1, 2025. There is no Tariff if the product is built or manufactured in the United States. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

On Trump's "movie tariffs". Interested in the views of US lawyers. My plain-reading is that International Economic Emergency Powers Act (IEEPA) specifically excludes messing with movies from the broad authorities it gives the President. 👇 www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/...
(b)Exceptions to grant of authority
The authority granted to the President by this section does not include the authority to regulate or prohibit, directly or indirectly—
(1)any postal, telegraphic, telephonic, or other personal communication, which does not involve a transfer of anything of value;
(2)donations, by persons subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, of articles, such as food, clothing, and medicine, intended to be used to relieve human suffering, except to the extent that the President determines that such donations (A) would seriously impair his ability to deal with any national emergency declared under section 1701 of this title, (B) are in response to coercion against the proposed recipient or donor, or (C) would endanger Armed Forces of the United States which are engaged in hostilities or are in a situation where imminent involvement in hostilities is clearly indicated by the circumstances; or [2]
(3)the importation from any country, or the exportation to any country, whether commercial or otherwise, regardless of format or medium of transmission, of any information or informational materials, including but not limited to, publications, films, posters, phonograph records, photographs, microfilms, microfiche, tapes, compact disks, CD ROMs, artworks, and news wire feeds. The exports exempted from regulation or prohibition by this paragraph do not include those which are otherwise controlled for export under section 4604 [3] of this title, or under section 4605 [3] of this title to the extent that such controls promote the nonproliferation or antiterrorism policies of the United States, or with respect to which acts are prohibited by chapter 37 of title 18; or

If Trump is serious about tariffs on movies, it's a very dangerous escalation. Tariffs have not traditionally been applied to services, and the United States is a massive net exporter of services. We would be extremely vulnerable to any service-based retaliation.
