satin ribbons

After unexpectedly winning her first blue ribbon for a sewn cape in 1981, Carol St. Clair Johnson developed an enduring love for the New Mexico State Fair. The quilt Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years incorporates more than six hundred of the ribbons she won at the fair every subsequent year except 2020 (when the fair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson earned ribbons for needlework, knitting, crochet, pies, cookies, cakes, canning, jewelry, flowers, vegetables, and potted plants. The title of the quilt is a reference to the state song, and the design places the state's Zia sun symbol at the center. The quilt earned Johnson yet another ribbon: Best in Category (miscellaneous quilt) at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair.

would you like to see an incredible action movie, but historical? this is during the bandit uprisings of the early 16th century in China
ndits dared attack even the home of the Great Sage.19
The bandits soon left Queli, and late in April 1511, forces under
Liu the Sixth assaulted Tancheng, Yanzhou Prefecture, a relatively small
city located along two major routes leading to the wealthy south.20
While the bandits attacked scores of county seats across North China,
the events at Tancheng reveal in detail the dynamics of how local
defense actually worked—the personal negotiations, the temptations,
and the risks.
In this case, the district magistrate entrusted the defense of the
community to the relatively lowly district jailer, Kang Youhui.21 Kang
rallied locals, assembled several hundred braves, and oversaw the con-
struction of a defensive earthen wall, topped with doors as crenellations.
After completing these preparations, Kang selected several dozen cap-
able men to hide in ambush outside the earthen fortifications. When
the bandits drew near, the men emerged from their hiding spots, be-
heading dozens of the outlaws. Kang, however, cautioned the newly
From Banditry to Rebellion and Back Again 125
confident inhabitants of Tancheng, “The bandits are enraged and are
sure to arrive in great strength. We are in a dangerous predicament.”22
Kang’s preparations continued, as he enlarged the walls, dredged
low-lying lands, and put the city’s weapons into order. Kang himself
donned armor and helmet as he supervised the defense preparations
night and day. He posted scouts at great distances. Inside the fortifica-
tions, Kang maintained strict control, meting out rewards and punish-
ments without fail. According to one observer, Kang “faintly resembled
a great general.”

The image is of a four panel comic.
The first panel shows Sarah, the protagonist, as a child. Off panel, someone says to her, “Enjoy your youth!”
The second panel shows child Sarah again, now frowning. The person off panel continues, saying “After you’re 30 you’ll be old and your life will basically be over.”
Before the last two panels there is text that reads “LIFE AFTER I TURNED 30.”
The third panel shows adult Sarah opening a door.
The fourth panel shows the door opens to a beautiful field with flowers, a rainbow, and a pond. Sarah says “Wait what.”
