Scottish film could steal The Jazz Singer’s crown as ‘world’s first talkie’
Scots-written Till the Bells Ring premiered a year before the Hollywood film, which featured spoken words by Al Jolson For almost a century, The Jazz Singer has been celebrated as the world’s first feature-length film to include synchronised dialogue (known as a “talkie”), and English as the first language of cinema. But a chance discovery threatens to upend film history with the news that it may have been beaten to the title by a full year – and by a film made in Glasgow and written in Scots. The breakthrough was made by the historian and self-confessed “film nerd” Marc David Jacobs, who was conducting research for a book on the first wave of British sound films when he came across the story of Till the Bells Ring. Here are the words of Robert Ryan reacting to the suggestion that his performance as the murderous anti-Semite Monty in “Crossfire” was “brave.” — Movieland, August 1947
(Conclusion of article “I’m Gambling With My Career” by Robert Ryan from Movieland, September 1947)

So I might step on a few toes, showing up Monty for a heel, for the Little Man with a Big Inferiority Complex which so many of his kind of swine turn out to be. Did somebody want to make something of it?

A lot more than Bob Ryan and this career, more than our one family and our comfort was at stake, Jessica and I decided that night, if there is any risk in speaking out against the race-baiters.

We all stand to lose if fascism comes. Not just the Jews. The Irish, the Catholics-and I'm both of those the Negroes, labor, the foreign born, everyone is done for whose color, or religion, occupation or political belief is distasteful to some new paperhanger-turned-Strong Man.

I don't want to see that happen here. And if it is "brave" to say so, then Jessica is right. We'd all better be getting brave. And fast!

The End

The ability to pour hundreds of millions of pounds into a loss-making TV channel, bent on wrenching British politics sharply to the right, is yet another of the ways in which extreme wealth is trying to remake UK democracy. It needs to be part of any serious conversation about political funding.

🦇 30 days until Halloween... *Movie marquee and theatre display for Horror of Dracula (originally released as Dracula in the UK). Hammer Film Productions, 1958. 🎞
Horror of Dracula (1958)—originally released simply as Dracula in the United Kingdom—is a landmark British Gothic horror film directed by Terence Fisher. Produced by the legendary Hammer Film Productions, it is celebrated as the first vampire film ever shot in color (Technicolor/Eastmancolor). The movie catapulted Christopher Lee (as Count Dracula) and Peter Cushing (as Dr. Van Helsing) into global horror icons, redefining the vampire mythos with an unprecedented blend of vibrant color, visceral gore, and underlying sensuality.

Hitting the shops next Thursday, my first non-horror Commando issue introduces the intrepid Captain Starblaze, star of comic books and movie serials, and the not quite so intrepid man behind the star-spangled hero's mask...
Cover of Commando issue 5999, shows a burning comic book lying among bullet shells, with a side panel showing a movie set with flying saucers dangling from wires. The comic is titled captain Starblaze, and its cover shows superheoes Captain Starblaze and Miss Miraculous flying through space, with the caption 'Can our heroes evade the deadly red menace?'
