Historically, having a vibrant, successful city people want to live in, visit, and spend money in is about supporting the arts, versus "we need more cops with guns to terrorize everyone" and while it's not rocket science it's pretty great to have a mayor who knows that.

basically, they care more about punishing people than housing them, even though that's actually the best way to reduce the public disorder they supposedly want to address & is also kinder and cheaper & more effective.

Hope can feel in short supply these days. But I am truly hopeful for the future, in large part because of the community we've built through the Bethesda Declaration. Proud to share these reflections on hope: ajph.aphapublications.org/doi/full/10.... May they bring you some hope.

Of course @brandyzadrozny.bsky.social has the most interesting review of the MAHA Summit. She asks who organized the event, who attended, and where the money goes. Kennedy likes to keep his grift in the family. Zadrozny notes: "Finn was the summit’s first speaker." www.ms.now/news/maha-su...
If the divergent, often competing pet interests of the activists within MAHA made the movement hard to define, the structure behind the business of MAHA is murkier still. The summit was presented by MAHA Center, a nonprofit helmed by Tony Lyons, publisher of Kennedy’s books and other contrarian works. Lyons also runs MAHA Action, a separate nonprofit, and MAHA PAC, the rebranded super PAC that bankrolled Kennedy’s presidential bid and is now backing Republican candidates in the midterms. Tickets to the summit went to “MAHA members” who enrolled at the $6,000-a-year tier — a membership advertised and presented by Lyons’ MAHA Action but whose agreement is with MAHA Holdings, a separate entity with no public-facing website, about which little is known beyond its CEO, former tech entrepreneur Alex Hardy, and one board member: Kennedy’s 29-year-old son, Finn.

AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”
APStylebook @APStylebook

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.

At least one Trump cult member started out as a member of the sexually abusive 12-step based DC "Midtown AA' group. While real AA isn't a cult, its ideas can be spun off easily into one by leaders imposing AA concepts like confession by force www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-i...

Carr was a member of the group in his teens and 20s. There is no evidence Trump’s powerful FCC chair participated in any inappropriate conduct

Police can’t eliminate organized crime, drug trafficking, or the illegal drug supply, yet nobody says policing “doesn’t work.” Someone uses drugs near a harm reduction service and suddenly harm reduction caused the entire crisis. That double standard is absurd. Smh 🙄

what's especially absurd about this is that we have data going back to the 70s about how harmful this is & contrary to what we know about how people learn (a little out of comfort zone, not in panic zone & gradually increasing stress only with support not coercion).
