yeah one thing that gets to you about the UK gender wars is that despite everyone claiming they're on the side of rationality, the more you push them, the more likely they are to argue that no trans person whatsoever should have rights in the UK

85ºF. The closest early voting place took young, lively students 45 minutes to march to. An hour and 1/2 to get on line at the polls and turnaround to go home. Some folks aren't up to that exertion in the heat. In NYC – I walk 3 blocks to a poll. Everyone should have convenient access to voting.

Before Trump it was just assumed that all this background machinery type shit was in the hands of career civil servants who followed carefully prescribed legal and administrative procedures and one thing DOGE really focused on was disrupting that. Do not assume it still works like that!

Something very important to figure out before Jan 20, 2029 is whether, when a new President is inaugurated, they will control the computer system at GSA (i.e. doors to federal buildings) and Treasury payments system or if those systems will be somehow in the hands of DOGE cronies

A thing I think even most people who have paid attention don’t realize about DOGE is that we still don’t actually know what they did. Just obtaining the records and putting people under oath is really important.

It's not "strikingly juvenile" and it's not a "personal broadside." It's hate speech. The Vice President is trying to get people to vote against a Democrat by implying that he's gay and/or a pedophile and/or a fetishist. Take it seriously. It is on a par with every other kind of hate speech.

“you’re contributing to the nazi propaganda website” and “it’s making you worse” are both true for everyone who stays, but it’s hard to convince folks who don’t have a large following themselves that they’re really part of the problem they need to stop getting value out of the platform to leave

boy Trump fucked the American auto industry. first he yanks their EV subsidies, leading them to slash production and write off tens of billions in investment, then he jacks up the price of oil by 50%, leading to skyrocketing EV demand going almost entirely to China bc GM et al left the market

Cause #1: Republican presidents can do crimes with impunity Surely this is a core pillar of Founding-era thought, right??? Well, no, obviously no. The presidency even as it existed in 1960 was leaps and bounds more powerful than anything Alexander Hamilton would've dared propose

And of course this is WHY they wrap themselves in formalism. It's kind of the Karl Rove thing, hit the enemy where *you're* weak. We're a bunch of hacks reverse-engineering our preferred political results, so of course we say that we're the only ones who are actually Doing Law

a big reason (though not the only one) that so many elite institutions capitulated to Trump immediately in early 2025 is they had learned through long experience that Dems are too chickenshit to punish them for basically any reason. but things can change!

Over the last decade, there were two hypotheses: H1: the political right genuinely cared about threats to speech from the left. H2: they were using campus speech wars to impose their values and silence dissent. Today, the answer is clear, but I can't find any of the H1 people admitting their error.
