The president of the United States is an adjudicated rapist who bragged about sexually assaulting women and who was such good friends with Jeffrey Epstein that he provided girls for him and was accused in an FBI interview of assaulting an underaged girl.

Basically: assimilation is not something immigrants do or don’t do; it’s something US citizens do or don’t do with respect to them. It’s an acknowledgment we can always withhold. It’s power over immigrants that lasts forever.

When job growth was 5-10x this per month under Joe Biden, we were having a nonstop National Conversation™️ about the imminent recession & being told that only the unemployed cared about jobs, but everyone cared about inflation.

Says quite a bit that Roberts is friends with a guy like this:
At a July protest on the Port Clyde dock, Mr. Lipson, the chief justice’s close friend, approached Ellen Koches, a retired museum educator from Washington, Maine, who was mounting a sign along the railing showing the American flag imprinted with some of the court’s most conservative decisions.

“I’m going to take a picture of your license plate, look up where you live, and stand in front of your house and protest,” Mr. Lipson said, according to both he and Ms. Koches.

“Is that a threat?” she responded.

“It’s a promise,” he replied.

Jessica Cantu Vuittonet, who runs a coffee shop in San Benito, Texas, cast her first ballot in 2024 — for Donald Trump. Two years later, after her brother was deported, she feels angry and betrayed.

Ariel Salinas, who owns a construction company in McAllen, Texas, can no longer reliably find laborers for his work crews. He blames the president’s immigration policies for his financial headaches.

And Luis Cabrera, a pastor who once mobilized his congregation in Harlingen, Texas, to vote for Republican candidates, is now trying to keep Hispanic evangelicals from giving up on voting altogether.

When I read "Phaedrus" as an undergrad, we talked about the irony of Plato using the written word to have "Socrates," who is a written character and not a "mind" in this text, disparage writing. Surely Cruz didn't miss that? www.nytimes.com/2026/09/29/o...
In Plato’s “Phaedrus,” Socrates offers a startling criticism of writing. Written words, he claims, are not the true children of knowledge, because writing cannot speak, answer questions or come to its own defense. Only through conversation among minds, he suggests, does reason yield real insight. For the past two millenniums, this appraisal has seemed like a failure to appreciate the power of writing. But perhaps Socrates was right, and we think best by speaking, answering and defending our ideas.

Maybe an unpopular opinion but this Eric Schmitt thing demonstrates a good reason why complex prosecutions take a long time to prepare, since one mistake can cascade into a structural failure that tears the whole case apart (in this case, instantly and humiliatingly).

The thing I like about the Eric Schmitt story is starts from a stupid premise and continually gets worse. First: "Hey, let's call attention to the fact that a president with an approval rating in the mid 30s is doing nothing to improve that except whining that he was prosecuted unfairly.

One of the ironclad rules of damage control is sometimes you just shut the fuck up, since saying *anything* will make it worse. Trump convinced the GOP that that's not the case, and they're suffering because of it.

McMegan won't admit that she's furious she wasn't fake-canceled like Bari Weiss, since the two of them are privileged fifth-rate writers but Weiss and her low IQ have made tens of millions while McMegan whines into the void at a failing newspaper. She's the Pete Best of hacks.

I just watched about half of the video. Two thoughts: 1. Turns out I'd never heard it and it's worse than I imagined. 2. Like so many "country" songs, it's the musical equivalent of the McRib sandwich: a market-tested, mass produced simulation (simulacrum?) of a fantasy. Pffft.

My take: Weiss codes Liberal; she's a Jewish Lesbian from NY. She makes them feel more "open-minded." Vance was in the military and wrote a book with "Hillbilly" in the title. He makes them feel more "populist." Hanania is not on the same level, but he makes them feel more "intellectual."

Ed Sheeran is supposedly worth $400 million. He could have said "no" to the demands he drop Macklemore and made himself a free speech hero and (probably) made more money. Instead, he looks like a Suffolk ginger weasel. The whole point of Fuck You money is to be able to say Fuck You.

On the one hand, this isn’t surprising since Jacobin’s emphasis on class means everything else is a distraction. On the other, calling someone making $150k working class means they don’t understand class.
