Following this with interest. I think the "uwu morality!" arguments come from the exact same place as the ongoing Tumblr debates over whether reading/writing fiction about Wicked Things makes you a bad person. It doesn't. And "abusing" an AI doesn't either. Some folks need a new theory of mind.

I've been immersed in research on Reconstruction in Lousiana and it's a very difficult truth to absorb that the white terrorist movement in the South was among the most successful terrorist movements in global history. I dare AG Sulzberger and Joe Kahn to read this paragraph and tell me any of it is inaccurate — and then tell me they still think both-sidesing is a morally defensible thing to do and that history will look kindly upon them.

Partisan polarization is not the greatest threat to U.S. democracy, but a symptom of a deeper struggle over who belongs and deserves equal rights. Rapid gains by racial minorities, women, and LGBTQ citizens have produced an ethnonationalist backlash whose adherents now wield
disproportionate power through the Republican Party. This conflict has intensified partisan animosity and moral disengagement, but a "both sides" diagnosis obscures the asymmetry between a faction seeking to reverse social progress and those resisting it. Polarization is therefore less the disease than democracy's immune response to an unpopular, antidemocratic movement.
Suppressing that response in the name of civility would only strengthen the movement and imperil pluralistic self-government. The United States can still become its most inclusive democracy, but only if leaders defend equal rights and voters hold accountable those who will not.

It's time for the public to learn that public services cannot run on the concept of doing more with less. When there are large cuts to services that rely on public monies, people should feel the results. Libraries, universities, etc. need to stop trying to lessen the visibility of funding cuts.
