Very good advice. I'd add that you should use the job ad to structure your letter & cv. Lots of workplaces (like mine) use the listed qualifications section of the requisition to make a rubric for evaluating applications.

At a time when the most influential leaders of the U.S. need to stand up loudly and clearly for the rule of law, they are leading the charge in the opposite direction. But not Jack Smith. Kudos to him for continuing to be a much needed voice of clarity.

When I taught at an all-boys prep school, we'd do an activity where I had them list every sexual term they could think of. They'd often laugh, as many were absurd things meant for Urban Dictionary. We'd then go through how many terms were violent (~85%) and how many were male-dominant (~90%).

I am convinced that the way out of this isn't to make the humanities easier, endlessly flexible to meet the demands of people who might otherwise blow them off---it's to make them harder and more disciplined in effort

AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”
APStylebook @APStylebook

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.

This constant switching is demanding so much more extra mental energy from staff (no settling into a routine, constatly on your toes), and denies students the ability to build a bond with their teachers. An occasional group-taught module is great, but this general state of confetti-teaching is mad.

in the end, the human drive to preserve, sustain, and even expand real knowledge —to try to move toward truth— is inexhaustible. No degree of oppression, and no campaign of barbarism, however sustained, can ever finally expunge it. this is a source of beauty on earth

How to do with books, especially bibles, when you live in a material world? Well, William Hogarth of 18th century fame reminds us of the typical re-using (of bindings). In this case, the leather binding is re-used for a shoe sole. #bookhistory #booksky

Really, no one else is getting these long ai-influenced requests that say "Materials of particular interest include" then give lists of record types? They use the same formula for "relevant names" and/or "search terms". They are suddenly taking up a lot of reference work

Monica Keane @monicakeane.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
Anyone else's archives getting detailed requests formulated with AI with lists of record types? They aren't illegitimate per se, but more just weirdly formulaic and asking for an awful lot of research.

Jared Kushner is not "on the other side of the aisle." He's not an elected official. He's not an administration official. He's the president's son-in-law and a private citizen. You do not, in fact, have to take meetings with relatives of the president. Some might even say you should *not* do that
