I’d suggest the genre of profile journalism has some shortcomings
The cover of Fortune Magazine that calls the convicted fraud Sam Bankman-Fried “the next warren buffet” because of his crypto-scamThe cover of Forbes, where Elizabeth Holmes holds a capsule of blood for a cover story extolling her genius, shortly before she was convicted for fraud and sentenced to a long prison sentence.A glossy photo spread extolling the glamour and taste of Asma al-Assad, weeks before her husband committed multiple war crimes and eventually had to flee to Russia to avoid being hacked apart by an enraged rob.

Re the debate on the cliff edge where tax-free childcare is lost at £100k leading to people keeping their income below this amount, it’s obvious that such cliff edges are bad as it skews decisions about work – no-one should be worse off if their earnings increase. /1 🧵

Kemi Badenoch’s whole shtick is slash and burn, which is red meat for the Westminster-brained, but for the wider electorate… what actually is her vision for what emerges from the ashes? What sort of country does she want us to become? Seemingly just one that’s punitive, uncaring and nasty?

There is a lot of "oh dear" to go around in the results of this very thorough Pew study on the issues with synthetic samples, but this strikes me as particularly "oh dear" www.pewresearch.org/data-labs/20...
AI polling results can lean on racial or partisan stereotypes

In many cases, our AI poll took beliefs or attitudes that are reasonably common among a particular subgroup and portrayed them as nearly ubiquitous. For example, our AI poll would indicate that:

97% of Hispanic adults are at least somewhat likely to follow the World Cup (while the actual share is 43%).

Mind-blowing story in Private Eye about how the Telegraph's chief reporter reached out to James Orr (or meant to) after the Channel 4 donation revelations

...within hours of journalists on either the *Guardian* or *Sunday Times* contacting Reform for comment on the same stories ahead of them publishing their own investigations. Reform deputy leader Richard Tice and his fiancée, supposed journalist Isabel Oakeshott, even crowed online about their spoiler tactics.

Not that the *Telegraph* doesn't do its own leg work when reporting on Reform. After James Orr, the party's head of policy, had to resign after a sting by *Channel 4 News* (see "*Right Orr Wrong*, p14"), *Telegraph* chief reporter Rob Mendick texted Orr: "I was hoping to talk to you entirely on background," he schmoozed. "You must be feeling very bruised and I totally Appreciate [sic] the sensitivities. I suspect you deserve better and I wanted to see how I can put the record straight in some way." Alas, instead of the Reformer and Cambridge theologian, Mendick messaged someone else, who shared it with the *Eye*!

I’m getting really bored with how so many policy announcements are just deeply unserious attempts to avoid making actual important decisions or about having those discussions. Also bored by the constant culture war framing with the condescending “holier-than-though” tone to match. It’s pathetic.

James O’Brien framed this nonsense beautifully. I can only paraphrase. Express claims ‘Labour losing control of borders because one small dinghy made it to Folkestone undetected’. Which means Express is acknowledging Labour had control of the borders and those migrants were arrested.

Lots of talk of growth ahead of the Budget, as if it were a baroque puzzle. Our problem is basic. It's that we no longer support the things which facilitate growth: Europe, immigration, higher education, tax simplification, policy stability. These are all choices and could stop making them anytime.

If there's a single graph you need to see to understand the AI extinction debate, it's this. To survive, frontier AI giants need to burn $10 trillion (a tenth of world GDP) over nxt 5 years. But they will only earn $3 trillion - a financial blackhole of $7 trillion. Who is going to go extinct?
Anthropic, OpenAI and Google DeepMind will need $10 trillion over next 5 years, but will earn only about $3 trillion.
