You have about 16 million customers and you are their monopoly supplier of something everyone needs every day of their lives and you now need billions of pounds of public money otherwise you are “going bust?” Maybe … maybe someone needs to ask a few questions and get some answers … at last.

Our rapid disillusionment with political leaders is treated by much of the media as some kind of pathology. But what I see is these leaders backtracking on their promises, dashing people's hopes and serving the ultra-rich ahead of the rest of the population. Why wouldn't we be disillusioned?

If early release can be altered so as to exempt homicide offences, it should be. Prisoners who have caused the gravest harm should be among the last to benefit from the overcrowding crisis. But carving out exceptions for individual prisoners in response to media campaigns is weak and unprincipled.

FWIW I feel the same way about data centers. Not like they're the first commercial building in human history to come with environmental, community and resource impacts. Also not like the builders lack capital. Regulate the shit out of how they're built and make them compensate local communities.

Yes & herein lies the problem. When Labour was dragged to the hard left by Corbyn, centre-left Labour MPs fought for their traditions and their principles. When the same thing happens in the Tory party, centre-right Conservative MPs go gently into that good night.

Baron Hermer's argument is especially relevant at a time when Nigel Farage, one of the ECHR's most vocal critics, is resigning only to seek re-election in the same seat of Clacton-on-Sea. Democracy depends on strong institutions and protections, and the ECHR helps defend it.
Many of the leading opponents of the ECHR are the same group of millionaires who oppose workers rights. They are the same group of millionaires who oppose renters rights. And they are the same group of millionaires who want to kick away the safety nets for ordinary people.

Comparing coverage of the Belfast and Edinburgh attacks, it seems that if politicians politicise and racialise a crime, then it will get far more attention than a crime that is in itself political and racist but doesn’t serve a political agenda. That’s not a good message
